Daniel Sampson

Lieutenant Commander Daniel Sampson is an officer in the Terran Ascendency, with the current assignment as main engineer aboard Vanguard One under the command of Vice Admiral Alexis Walsh.   Daniel Sampson was born to a civilian family of six near the ruins of Berlin, Germany. As a child, he worked on the family farm and developed an innate ability at understanding and fixing machines at the farm. When he became of age, he joined military service, albeit begrudgingly, and entered into the Military Academy in Malmö, which is where he met Alexis Walsh.   At the time of their meeting, Daniel was completing his second year at the Academy and the two quickly became friends, with Daniel treating Alexis as a younger sister. During their time together, the two were practically inseparable, and both shared an interest in engineering during their studies. Although both were incredibly talented in the field, they dovetailed their knowledge and were able to develop theories and procedures that revolutionized the functions of the entire Terran Ascendency fleet. The two of them proudly walked together at graduation, where they separated as Alexis continued on to Officer Training and Daniel entered service as an engineer.   For three years, Daniel worked on multiple ships and mining platforms as an engineer, but had grown bored of service as the work had become monotonous. He was about to request a permanent transfer back to New Stockholm for the end of his commission when Alexis, now Captain, requested his permanent assignment to her ship. Unable to refuse Alexis, he joined her crew where she pushed through a promotion for him to Lieutenant Commander and made him her chief engineer, despite the objections of Ascendency command.   During this time, the two continued to discuss engineering theories, often late into the night, and it was these discussions that led to the saving of the High Council during the New Stockholm accident. Upon hearing of the situation, the ship set course and Daniel and Alexis closed themselves off to come up with a plan to save the ship. It took nearly an hour before the ship reached the station, but their theory of extending the structural integrity field worked in the end, although their ship and the station were disabled and badly damaged in the process.   Daniel did not want the spotlight on him so when it came time to tell their story, he begged Alexis to take credit, which she begrudgingly did. Shortly afterwards, he left military service and returned to the farm that he grew up and worked there until Alexis was named Vice Admiral and posted to lead the Vanguard One fleet. He was there at the ceremony where she took him aside and begged him to once again rejoin and accompany her. Once again, unable to say no to her, he acquiesced, rejoined, and through Alexis' intervention, joined the Vanguard One fleet where she once again made him her chief engineer, over the strong objections of the Ascendency command.   Daniel has a very warm and jovial personality most of the time, but can become downright serious if the need arises. He projects a confident persona, but this belies the serious doubt he has of his abilities and ideas. The only person who gives him confidence is Alexis, but he still defers to her way of thinking if there is an impasse. Despite this, he is a very competent engineer and leader for the engineering staff. Able to quickly think on his feet and come up with creative solutions, he is able to push the boundaries of the ships he is on to complete whatever task is in front of him, even if it cripples the ship he is on.
