Oakbridge

The wetlands are not an easy place to live, but the people of Oakbridge found a way, this entire settlement is built above the mire on wooden platforms. In many areas of the mire, the only logical course of travel is via boat, but natives to the region know the way to get through the mire on foot, without ever getting your boots wet. The mire is not the safest of places, with hungry creatures lying in wait beneath the water for their next meal, and so most travellers take the roads north circumventing Oakbridge and the mire, towards Ironbreach.   The wetlands are not an easy place to live, but the people of Oakbridge found a way, this entire settlement is built above the mire on wooden platforms. The Vahl’Kelavi Mire is a vast region of marshlands that are perilous to traverse without a guide, the safe passages through the swamp are hard to find, and hard to follow. The people of Oakbridge have constructed a network elevated bridges and platforms which they call the high walk, making the area around the village more hospitable to outsiders. Even still, the village is humid, wet and uncomfortable. The high walk itself requires frequent maintenance and upkeep, which can prove difficult the further away from Oakbridge the high walk travels, portions of the high walk are in disarray. The mire is not the safest of places, with hungry creatures lying in wait beneath the water for their next meal, and so most travellers take the roads north circumventing Oakbridge and the mire, towards Ironbreach.   Two indigenous races to Vahl’kelavi share peace with the residents of Oakbridge, these being the Tortles and Grungs. Oakbridge tends to rely on these races as guides for travel beyond the high walk itself, in exchange for resources the aboriginals find valuable. Oakbridge does not receive too many visitors, most travellers seek the Ironbreach road as it caters more towards caravan and horseback travel.

Demographics

The Stiltz   The entirety of this ward rises 6-8 feet above the marsh waters of the mire on sturdy wooden beams, from a distant view it appears as a village on stiltz, traversed by a series of boardwalks and bridges. The majority of residential dwellings reside in the Stiltz, along with any shops or inns. A particular trait of the shops in Oakbridge is the sale of used equipment which looters salvage from the unfortunate souls who travel into the mire without proper precautionary measures.   Skimwater docks   The skimwater docks descend below the Stiltz, with platforms that lies about flush to the murky surface. Residents traverse from the docks on small personal vessels akin to kayaks, which are used in order to reach areas that the high walk does not traverse to, such as the scattering of small drylands within the mire, these vessels are quiet and do not attract to much attention from the predators of the mire. The high walk itself begins from the skimwater docks, which then extends out into the mire for miles.
