Magic and Demons

Demons are inherently magical beings. Their own kind of magic is called Arcane Magic. The resource to cast this type of magic is Arcane Spell Slots. These are created by using Arcanum Points. Arcanum Points work differently in physical and nonphysical demons. Physical Demons use them only to create Arcane Spell Slots whereas for Nonphyiscal Demons they also replace Hit Points.

Casting Spells

Demons do not need to use gestures to cast spells. While you are in your True Form, you can ignore the Somatic (S) component of spells.

Arcane spell slots

To cast Arcane Magic demons must use their Arcane spell slots. An Arcane spell slot can be used to cast Arcane spells as well as normal spells. You may gain access to Arcane spell slots by the means described below.

Arcane Spell Slot Level

Demons can create
  • 1st level Arcane spell slots at level 1,
  • 2nd level Arcane spell slots at level 7, and
  • 3rd level Arcane spell slots at level 13.
If you have a class that gives you access to a certain (normal) spell slot level, you can create Arcane Spell Slots up to that spell slot level instead.

Arcanum Points

Every demon is a magical being. They have access to a unique source of power. This magical power is called Arcanum. How many Arcanum Points are in your Arcanum pool is dependent on your True Size and if you have a physical form (Morpher, Hellstruct, Plantoid) or not (Objectoid, Parasite, Spectral).

Arcanum in Physical Demons

Morphers, Hellstructs and Plantoids can use Arcanum points when they level up in two ways:
  • They can convert Arcanum points into Arcane spell slots.
  • They can convert Arcane spell slots back into Arcanum points.
This allows them to reuse these Arcanum points to create other levels of Arcane spell slots. Arcanum points that are not converted into Arcane spell slots remain in the pool and can be used on the next level up. The conversion rates are in the table on the right (or below on mobile).

Arcanum in Nonphysical Demons

Nonphysical Demons, like Objectoid, Parasite and Spectral, do not have HP. They use Arcanum points as Hit Points. They cannot benefit from healing effects. Death Saving Throws If Demon falls to 0 Arcanum points, they become unconscious and start rolling death saving throws. An ally can spend a spell slot to roll an Intelligence (Arcana) check to help a dying nonphysical demon. On a success, the dying Nonphysical demon gains Arcane spell points according to their conversion table. On a failed check, the spell slot is still used but the dying demon does not benefit from it. Arcanum Conversion A nonphysical demon can use a bonus action to
  • convert Arcanum Points into one Arcane spell slot or to
  • convert Arcane Spell Slots into Arcanum Points and
Converting Arcanum Points into an Arcane Spell Slot reduces also the Arcanum Point maximum according to the conversion rate. A spent Arcane spell slot vanishes and raises your maximum Arcanum Points according to the conversion rate.

Additional means of Regeneration

Apart from long rests and short rests, Demons can restore Arcanum Points by corrupting the world and people inhabiting it.

Temporary Arcanum Points

Demons can gain temporary Arcanum points by corrupting the world and beings around them. These last for 24 hours or until the next sunrise.

Physical Demons

Physical Demons which already have temporary Arcanum points and would gain additional temporary Arcanum points, can choose to either lose the old points and gain the new ones, or to keep the old points and not gain the new ones. They can spend a bonus action to use temporary Arcanum points to regain spell slots (arcane spell slots and normal spell slots alike). They cannot convert them into new Arcane spell slots.

Nonphysical Demons

Nonphysical Demons can use temporary Arcanum points
  • to restore their amount of current Arcanum points up to their Arcanum point maximum or
  • to take them as temporary Arcanum Points functioning as temporary HP (og 5E rule reference). It is not possible to create Arcane Spell Slots from temporary Arcanum Points.
They can spend a bonus action to use temporary Arcanum points to regain normal spell slots. They cannot convert them into new Arcane spell slots.

Corrupting Land

Demons can corrupt their surroundings to regain Arcanum points. They can do that once every 24 hours. They touch the ground and spend 1 action to turn the ground into corrupted land in a radius of 10 feet. They gain 8 temporary Arcanum points. The Corrupted Land gives disadvantage for skill checks, saving throws and attacks to everyone who stands on it. The land stays corrupted until it gets purified by an angel or priest using holy water. Corrupted land cannot be corrupted again. Corrupting Land increases the chaos counter by 1.

Corrupting Mortals

You convince an intelligent mortal (INT >= 10) to give in to a vice they would normally not indulge themselves in. They must do this willingly, without being threatened, charmed, or otherwise magically controlled. You may make an ability check to talk them into giving in. Every demon within 1 mile of the indulging mortal who has a chosen vice that is compatible with the indulged vice gains 8 temporary Arcanum points. If they gained temporary Arcanum points within the last hour, they can choose to add 8 temporary Arcanum points to their current temporary Arcanum points instead of replacing them. Corrupting Mortals increases the chaos counter by 1 for each corrupted target.
