Draconian

Draconians, also called Dragonborn by some, are a draconic race primarily inhabiting the island nation of Draka, the northern nation of Dragora in Vessaned, and the nation of Kaetzal at the heart of Emara. While their culture varies significantly between the three nations, the basic drives toward honor, self-discipline, and self-improvement exist in the vast majority of draconians, and some version of the clan system defines all the draconian social structure.   There are two major subgroups within the draconian species, the Dragorics, who are the most populous and powerful race of Dragora, and the Drakan, who are the majority species in Draka. Dragorics tend to be smaller and more lightly built than their robust Drakan cousins, but make up for their lack of size with an uncanny knack for navigation social situations. Drakans are more powerfully built, and are generally 6 to 7 feet tall, tending on the high side of that number. Males and females in both ethnicities are of similar sizes, and there are few differences in the cultural and social roles of genders. Both ethnic groups, and a third, Draconids, are present in Kaetzal, with Draconids thought to be the origin of both of the other ethnicities as they share traits with both.   Dragonborn of all types resemble tailless, wingless humanoids with draconic features. They have small, fine scales, usually in brass or bronze, but other colors can be present as well. While sometimes mistaken as reptilian, Draconians are warm blooded egg-layers, and nurse their young up to a year after they are born.   The Draconic language come in three mutually intelligible dialects, the long distance between the draconian homelands being mitigated by the continued contact between the three nations provided by the dragons that sit at the top of each draconian culture. East Draconic, West Draconic, and South Draconic all have some flavor and loanwords from neighboring cultures, but each can be understood by attentive listeners who speak one of the other dialects.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Draconians are bilaterally symmetrical bipeds of draconic origin, with a body plan similar to that of humans, orcs, and other similar bipeds. Being of draconic origin, the draconian hand is characterized by having three fingers and an opposable thumb. Rather than the smooth dermis of most other bipedal species, Draconians are scaled in a wide variety of hues, though usually with burgundy, brown, dark green, or saffron yellow as a base color.

Genetics and Reproduction

Draconians reproduce sexually, with females carrying eggs fertilized in vitro by males. Two months after a successful mating, the female will lay an egg roughly 18 centimeters long, which then gestates for an additional 630-650 days. At the end of the gestational period, the draconic infant will crack through the now weakened shell with their claws and snouts, and emerge as a newborn. The newly born draconian walks within 2 days of emerging, and is nursed by the mother for up to a year after emergence.

Growth Rate & Stages

After the toddler year, the draconian child will be roughly 3 feet tall, and begin a period of mental and physical development culminating in pubescence around the age of 10. The adolescent draconian phase then lasts roughly 5 years, at the end of which the child has grown into a fully developed adult draconian.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Draconians are omnivores, preferring a diet of mostly meat, with green vegetation and fruit.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Draconian senses are in a similar range with other bipedal species. Draconids and Dragorics are capable of seeing beyond the human spectrum into the ultraviolet, allowing them better vision in low light conditions than many other species.
