Al-Andalus Mountain Range

Shield of the East

The Al-Andalus Mountain Range is a narrow but long mountainous region that divides the Eastern Continent from the Western Continent. The area is a part of the nation of Al-Andalus, and borders the nation of Nestoria. The mountain chain borders the Silvas Jankil on its southern end, and the town of Tyre as well as the Gray Marches on it's northern edge.

Geography

The Al-Andalus Mountain Range is a long chain of mountains that extends near the entirety of the nation of Al-Andalus. The chain runs almost directly north to south, meaning that the area surrounding the mountains are liable to shifts in climate and ecology as one would travel along them. As a mountain chain near the ocean, the lands are liable to ecological and weather shifts as a result. In general, much of the area between the Al-Andalus mountain chain and the nearby Bay of Vergil are more verdant (though is not always the case, especially towards the central region). Nestoria, which lies on the leeward side of the mountain chain is generally dry as a result, with much of the land of that region being split between deserts, steppes, and salt flats. The extreme south of the chain is also a fairly dry region populated by savanna that stretches south until it borders the Silvas Jankil. The northern region is quite green by comparison, hosting wind-kissed plains and moraine forests.

History

There is little to be said for the Al-Andalus Mountain Range. It has, and likely always will exist, but has never been the focal point of history. The land around the mountains has long been home to elven, orcish, and nomads of men, who hunt and sometimes offer their services as guides through the mountains. While such exploits are generally safe, they tend to be far less safe and more time consuming than the normal trade routes. Indeed, in some cases, such routes are watched by local bandit gangs or tribes of kobolds who will leap upon weak or isolated travelers. Most travelers, unsurprisly, prefer the well-patrolled large mountain passes near Kaffa and Samarkand, or the end of the mountain chain through the Gray Marches into Tyre.
