Session 22: Contact

General Summary

24 Callithra 1356

The party talks about their next moves, and Star‌ suggests asking for help from the Duke of Hennebrück sometime down the line. Feliks‌ brings up his plan of getting Alex to help them fight their father. He says he could also send her a message and ask to meet her. They decide that looking for the Inquisition‌ medallion is a good place to start, and start heading toward it. Nyandrea‌ scans the street for potential hiding places and safe houses. The party dons disguises and gets closer, walking through a commercial district. As they get closer, they realize the amulet is in a melee combat arena.   They walk inside, and discover that the amulet is in the front desk, which is being manned by a gnome.
Nyandrea: I think it’s time to place a sizeable bet.
Star: Yeah, a bet called Erupting Earth on the gnome.
Nyandrea: Maybe we go in with a touch… a touch? Of delicacy?
Star: Oh, so you’re thinking more like Hold Person, then.
Nyandrea: I guess but it is a storefront…
Feliks: We have a medallion! Why don’t we just pretend to be Inquisitors?
Nyandrea: That is a terrible idea.
Star: That’s such a good idea.
Nyandrea‌ slips away from these two idiots and inquires as to whether there are any fights on today, and learns there are two more. Star‌ uses detect magic but discovers that other than the medallion, there’s nothing magical here. Nyandrea‌ leans in flirtatiously and bets 15g on the underdog. Feliks‌ suggests that Star‌ turn invisible and search the desk.   Feliks‌ walks over to the counter and adds 2g to the pile, and tells Nyandrea‌ she’s not supposed to bet that much. He makes a melodramatic threat about leaving her with their child before storming off with Star‌, who immediately turns invisible and runs back in. The clerk tells Nyandrea‌ that if this is some kind of scam, it’s not going to work. She tells him to take the entrance fee out of her bet and asks him to escort her into the arena. Meanwhile, Star‌ picks the lock to the drawer with the medallion, finding it as well as a receipt that suggests someone bet it on a fight. The receipt has a note suggesting that the person won the bet but didn’t come to collect.   Star‌ tries to unlock another drawer, but gets one of her lockpicks stuck. She manages to free it but the clerk comes back before she can open it. She turns into a spider and scuttles away, squeezing out from under the door and going to find Feliks‌. Nyandrea‌ wins the bet, and collects her winnings, then comes out into the alley. Star‌ makes a Sylvan Hideaway where they can talk. Star‌ tells them that someone bet the medallion and abandoned it, and the party discusses a little bit about why they might have done that and how they might find out if Alex was involved. Feliks‌ suggests that he can turn into Alex and walk back in there to claim it, and see how the clerk reacts to her.
Rory: Feliks is going to take a deep breath, open his compact again, and turn into his wife, because that’s not weird.
Feliks: This is weird.
[Nyandrea‌ tries to invent white-out for like ten minutes before Feliks‌ just uses prestidigitation to fix up the ticket]   Feliks‌ walks into the arena as his wife, and tries to collect on the medallion bet, but the gnome insists that the tickets are only good for a week and that he cannot collect. He tells him that he told the woman who placed this bet that it was an unusual bet to make anyway and reaches for the panic button under his desk. Feliks‌ grabs the gnome, who shouts for the guards. Feliks‌ just picks him up and runs out the door.
Rory: Feliks is at an emotional breaking point. Nyandrea should know this, he took the stairs earlier.
Feliks‌ holds the gnome up against a wall, and tells him: I don’t want to hurt you, but the person who bet that stole it from me. He holds his sword up against him and demands answers. The gnome wets himself and gives a description of an unremarkable woman, possibly Isserian‌, possibly Escherian — there was nothing remarkable about her except for her insistence on betting the medallion and she didn’t give her name.   Feliks‌ lets the gnome go and cleans him up with prestidigitation, before taking the long way back to the Sylvan Hideaway.
Feliks: Well, good news, it wasn’t Alex.
Feliks‌ relays the description of the person who placed the bet, and mentions that she didn’t leave a gnome.
Feliks: Very helpful. Very helpful gnome.
Star: Oh good, I’m glad it worked out. You should do this more often.
Feliks: I should absolutely never do this again… I made him cry. From his bladder.
They speculate further about how they might find Fina‌, and Feliks‌ sends Alex a message:
Feliks: I need to talk to you, now. I’ll come alone. Meet me in von Burke’s basement. You can trust me.
Alex: Feliks, no. I can't get back to Isseria tonight, but when I can, please don't be there. We can't talk. She'll make me hurt you.
Feliks: Where are you? Who is she? Is my dad involved? And how did you leave so far?
Alex: Don't come here. Consider her lost. It's Princess Ana, and someone else -- I don't know who -- maybe your father? A teleportation spell in a device.
Star‌ expresses their shock that Alex has taken Fina‌ out of Isseria‌, and suggests that maybe they need to rest, since there’s nothing they can do right now. Feliks‌ wonders if perhaps they should look into his father. Nyandrea‌ takes some sleeping powder out of her box, and they go to sleep.

1 Ondatria 1356

Feliks‌ is awoken from his rest by a message from Fina‌:
Anabe. Small building near government buildings, block from ocean. Alex working against Inquisition, Ana, motive unknown. Doesn't know Neko; mind overtaken still? Won't kill me.
Feliks‌ runs to wake the others and tell them what Fina‌ said. They discuss their options for getting to Anabe, and decide to ask Princess Ana‌ for teleportation magic. They send her a note in the two-way bag:
Tracking Alex to Anabe. Need teleportation.
And Feliks‌ responds to Fina‌’s sending:
We’re coming to get you, don’t worry. Keep yourself safe. I’m sorry my advice didn’t help.
Fina‌ hears this response, and also hears some arguing from the next room. Alex comes in to check on her, and then leaves, dimming the lights at Fina‌’s request.   Meanwhile, the party gets a reply from Ana‌:
Not currently possible. I don’t have the same contacts in Isseria. Just stay put for now. I’ll have someone take care of it.
The party decides to ask for advice from Professor Emia. Nyandrea‌ asks her if she knows anything about teleportation magic.
Professor Emia: Of course. Any wizard worth their salt knows about teleportation magic.
Feliks: Shut up.
Feliks‌ asks if Emia can teach him how to teleport in, say, ten minutes, but Emia insists that it’s not possible, which Feliks‌ responds to by insulting her. Star‌ takes the circlet from Feliks‌ and asks her if she knows of Rayleigh. She responds that he’s a promising young man, well on track to become faculty after he graduates. Star‌ agrees, telling Emia that Rayleigh keeps getting lost in Hennebrück, and asks where the teleportation circle in Hennebrück was. She tells them that it’s in Hennebrück’s arcane library, and the party decides that’s where they’ll go next.
