Pinegolin

The Pinegolin is a pangolin-like creature with detachable pine cone-like scales.

Lifecycle

Seed

The Pinegolin begins as a pine nut that is tended to by the parent. The seed grows into a full pine tree, which then grows the Pinegolin baby during Autumn. When the tree is twice as tall as the pinegolin parent, it will wander away.

Juvenile

When Summer arrives, summer storms bring lightning. When the tree is struck, the Pinegolins fall and proceed to eat surrounding insects. Their hard scales protect them from predators, and will continually fall out and regrow. These are highly flammable and burn for long periods of time.

Adulthood

Pinegolins typically live up to 20 years, and can grow up to 30cm tall on all fours. At approximately 2 years old, they will start producing pine nuts from their behind. At around 15 years old, they will seek out proper nesting grounds to grow a batch of young.

Interactions With Humans

Pinegolins are a favoured companion by travellers, as they are both a good source of kindling and sustenance. While the scales they regrow are used by all who carry them, not everyone can bring themselves to eat the pine nuts that the Pinegolins excrete except in emergencies. Most travellers who own Pinegolins understand that they must be let free at 15 years of age for nesting, but some tend to keep the Pinegolins until they die, which is often frowned upon.   Because of their usefulness and passive nature, the Pinegolins are typically used on long and arid journeys.
