Wilorine

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

Fierce protection of homelands. They live mostly in the harshness of the Dea Mountains, and though very few others can make use of the land there, greed has caused some to want to conquer the mountains and the people who reside in them. Thus, the Wilorine have started wars with all who come to claim their lands.   Being mostly the small Droling race that populates the Dea Mountains, the Wilorine have been constantly underestimated with regards to their war practices. But due to the constant training against dangerous mountain creatures, and the military leaders doubling as town leaders, the Wilorine have vast skills in war, particularly when it comes to fighting in the mountains.

Common Dress code

Wilorine groups append fur to any clothing they have, usually with metal clasps for easy removal in the hotter weather and when washing different types of fabric. Despite the cold, fashion includes bare shoulders, where prized war markings are painted, tattooed, or scarred. Bare feet are also nearly constant while in the villages. These small amounts of bare skin are ways that the Wilorine flex their cold resistance and feel connected to the mountains and the earth they're made of.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Dueling to solve problems is the most common way of ending conflicts, but it is regulated to the third day of the week. The feuding people approach an official in their town, and in an appropriate area, they fight until one falls. These are not meant to be to the death, and killing someone in a duel essentially forfeits what the winner would be awarded.

Coming of Age Rites

Killing a dangerous creature that possibly threatens the area of Wilorin is what marks the point of becoming an adult. Normally this happens at 15, when an adolescent will go out on a hunting party accompanied by a seasoned hunter or two and slay a beast. If the adolescent does not make the final blow on the creature, it doesn't count.   Sometimes, however, children as young as 11 might kill a venomous snake that has already hurt someone, and it will count as their coming of age. They are not allowed to make big decisions concerning the villages until they are 15, but are offered other privileges that are usually for adults.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Dying in battle is the most noble way to go for a Wilorine. When a member of their community falls during wartime, they are carried to the top of the nearest mountain and burned in a pyre. For other deaths, the eyes, ears, and mouth of the deceased are covered to prevent dark energies from taking hold of their body and corrupting it. This is not practiced for those that die in battle because they are considered immune from that sort of fate.
