  Misterious magical cataclysms, spontaneously spawning monsters, ever dagerous dungeons. Civilizations are shattered, cities isolated, far outposts lost, mines infested with aberrations. Adventurer Guilds pick up the mantle of protecting civilians from the steadily growing threats. Meanwhile, new and new world events continue to arise: demonic incursions, orcish hordes, undead legions, extraplanar invaders, awakening of primordial entities, apocaliptic prophecies, sinister dragons (of course there would be dragons!), dark conspiracies within governments.   Watching disaster after disaster hit the remaining bastions of civilization, it is very hard to hold on to the faith in the higher powers, to trust that there is any sort of grand plan in place for the peoples of this catastropy-ridden world. It is even harder to adhere to the high moral standards of Heroism surrounded by struggling hard-headed surivors and sly crafty scoundrels.
