Corporea Fungi

Corporea Fungi, or Bodily Fungi, is a relatively new disease that plagues the four tribes of Verderi. Bodily Fungi is contracted when a person comes into contact with and touches a mushroom that carries the parasitic disease. Once touched, the disease migrates to the humanoid body. One is unable to tell an infected parasitic mushroom from a non-infected one. The main symptoms of Bodily Fungi are fever, headache, dizziness, and loss of breath, with the most common being the appearance of mushrooms growing all over the body. Due to being relatively new, there is not yet a known cure for Bodily Fungi, and it is also not very well understood by the general populace. A method that many believe to be a cure is only a temporary one and quite painful. Many believe that if a person just pulls the mushrooms from their body, then they will no longer continue to grow. This is incorrect, as the mushrooms will grow back in about a week in larger volumes. Pulling the mushrooms is a very painful process and not recommended due to the nervous system damage it may cause as well as skin damage. Bodily Fungi does not disappear on its own; it will infect its host until death. Another common way it is spread is through contact with an infected corpse. In the forest, there are many clusters of oddly arranged fungi. Those are most likely the corpses of the infected. Bodily Fungi has evaded the Salvation Society for months now, with no physician coming close to a way to relieve symptoms. The Salvation Society, said to be blessed by the Bloom Goddess, Dyani, is the first rift that Bodily Fungi created. Now that the Salvation Society is far from a cure, the four tribes grow anxious and paranoid about the disease, preventing their children from going to play in the forest. The Council of Verderi experienced the second rift caused by the disease. The four tribes were growing hostile towards one another, with some claiming to have caught the disease from mushrooms on the other’s land. The third rift caused a shortage of general medicine. A lot of herbal remedies sometimes use mushrooms to help heal other diseases and injuries. It is unknown if a mushroom is infected or not; therefore, all mushroom gathering is halted. This means that no herbal remedies, including mushrooms, can be prescribed to patients.
