The President of Antaizon

The President is an elected position in Antaizon, serving six year terms.   The President and the whole of the Antaizon Government was created following the terraforming of the Core Planets 457 years ago.   The Antaizon Government was established as a traditional representative government, with representatives from the different planets forming a single Senate that would agree on a President with a 70% vote. Because there was rarely, if ever, a political party that attained 70% of the vote, it was rare that anyone got approval for this position. In the absence of a President, a Caretaker was given far more limited power over the affairs of state.   A President had wide ranging powers to interpret laws, carry out military actions, and manage broad swaths of the economy provided they stayed in the realm of laws passed by the Senate.   A "Caretaker" was largely limited to figurehead status. They met with official Heads of State from other nations and had some ability to negotiate treaties, but outside of the ceremonial role of government, they had little ability to take independent action. Although they could propose laws, they could not issue executive order or take on independent police or military action without approval from the Senate. They could not veto laws. New regulations had to be approved by the Senate. Pardons had to be approved by a Pardon Commission. The Caretaker was the most visible member of government, but arguably the least powerful   Gureyna Muldaur has shifted between caretaker or President multiple times, and has proven an experienced and effective politician. Someone who rose to the top of the Antaizon system by being likeable and agreeable. An effective leader amidst certain crises, but never particularly revolutionary. Someone who rarely diverted from the demands of those powerful interests who dictated what occurred in government, business, civic, and cultural life across Antaizon.   Gureyna, nonetheless, always saw herself as a reformer, and sure enough, she pushed a number of important initiatives into law. That's a big deal. Caretakers were rarely expected to propose bills, much less get them passed. But none of this was enough to address the myriad crises affecting life in Antaizon at this time. To some, she was seen as a limp failed reformer, someone who failed to reign in the surveillance powers of the Empaths. To others, she was a progressive who had failed to preserve the traditions of Antaizon society.
