Pescado Pintado Cannery

This cannery was in operation in the early part of the 20th century, but shuttered its doors in the early 1930s, prior to the Spanish Civil War. It sits on the outskirts of the village of Paloma on a low cliff, part of it built out over the water on pillars in order to swiftly and easily lift nets full of fish directly from boats in the water below.   Once a major economic force in the town, not only adults but many children were employed there, and safety standards of the time being what they were, there are plenty of stories of injuries, deaths and other mishaps that center around the cannery. One story involves a boy that fell through the open floor and into the ocean below while working early in the morning; another involves an office secretary that either fell or was pushed into a piece of the factory equipment.   These days, the factory is in derelict condition with many broken windows and chains across the doors. Trash and graffiti from local teenagers on dares litter the interior. There are mutterings amongst the townsfolk that something ought to be done about it, whether it is renovating the building and trying to entreat new business, or at least making it safe enough to set up as a historical landmark and tourist attraction. Ghost stories are big sellers, after all. It seems to come up on the docket every few years, but nothing ever comes of it.
