The Merr (Filii Nawan)

The dragon god Nawan created the species known as the Merr.   The Merr live in the oceans of Ancora. They have their own societies and generally ignore the land-bound, although they have been known to hinder ships passing across the top of their cities. On occasion, sailors claim to have been saved by the Merr after a shipwreck.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Merr are completely covered in scales, with a prominent fin running down their back and a medium-length tail graced with its own fin. Their body is shaped somewhat like a lizard, with the arms and legs both coming out at the side; when they swim, they are able to press their arms forward and their legs backward into a torpedo shape. They have elongated faces and large eyes, and they breathe using gills.   Male and female merr are virtually indistinguishable.

Genetics and Reproduction

Baby merr are created during an annual ceremony (The Making) during late spring. The children begin arriving home in mid-summer. No one knows or cares whose genes have passed on to which child.

Growth Rate & Stages

The Merr mature quickly compared to many species; they are born with the ability to maneuver just as well as adults, and they eat the same food throughout their lifetime. They reach their adult size within two years.   Young Merr are generally brighter-colored than their older counterparts, but the only true way to know a Merr's age is to ask it.     Life expectency: 30 years

Ecology and Habitats

They live in the large, freshwater oceans of Ancora.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Their diet is primarily comprised of small fish.

Biological Cycle

They shed a few scales each day, as new ones grow in constantly. During the cold season, the Merr are known to go to the deeper parts of the ocean to keep warm.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The Merr do not communicate using speech; instead, they focus entirely on telepathy combined with body language. This telepathy may be used on a creature of any species, since it is the mind-to-mind exchange of information.
Conservation Status
The Merr are doing well as a species.
