Mivan
Mivan (a.k.a. The wind-maker)
At one time, ages ago, a boat full of sailors noticed a strange blur in the sky. Not water, not cloud, not sky, as the blur danced closer it grew larger and larger. It soon became larger than the ship, and it circled around a few times while the sailors watched in awe. Although they had heard stories of the various dragon gods and their deeds, no one on the ship had actually encountered one. Some of the sailors had doubted whether they existed at all. The next few minutes destroyed any doubts.
"Greetings!" a voice boomed in each of their heads unlike anything they had heard before. At the same time, the blur began to slowly ripple into the shape of a gigantic dragon - it was dark blue and silver, and the patterns swirled like the wind. "I am Mivan. I carry the news. Would you prefer to share information or gather some?" the voice asked.
The captain of the ship, unsure of how to answer a voice in his head, responded by shouting, "Great Mivan, please tell us of the path ahead. We have three days' travel south to get to our destination. Do you foresee any troubles in that direction?" He was a practical man, concerned mainly with the safety and speed of his delivery. The next stretch of the journey was through notoriously dangerous waters. Not only
did they hear reports of frequent attacks by pirates and the Merr but also terrible storms that appeared out of nowhere and lasted for days.
"The path to the south is clear and unimpeded; nothing between this ship and the city should cause your crew or cargo any harm," Mivan said. As they spoke, the giant creature continued swirling in the air, twirling around the ship even as it sailed toward its goal. The answer filled captain and crew alike with a feeling of joy and contentment, though whether this was the result of magic or merely the glorious news is difficult to discern.
The captain bowed low, relieved, and thanked Mivan profusely. The dragon god soon changed direction, and the crew rejoiced. Some of the sailors opened a barrel of alcohol and began singing to celebrate their good fortune. Against all odds, they had three days of clear sailing ahead and nothing to do but enjoy it.
As the huge figure, once again a small blur, disappeared on the horizon, there was a soft but distinct whisper that reached only the captain's mind this time. "Too bad you didn't ask what is coming up behind you," it said.
