City of Waterforge

History

Waterforge's history was torched by each other since the founding of this place. To historian's greatest dismay and curiosity, Waterforge has countless unknown mysteries above and below.

Foundation

It is known by many that Waterforge is founded by three dwarves and three elves who were in conflict even before the choosing of their fortress against some very powerful enemy. While the dwarves piles stone for strong foundation, the elves planted trees. The dwarves reinforced the walls with steel while the elves reinforced it with magic. Through all of these changes, the original founders tried their very best to take each other's credits as their own and in the end none of them remained.   By the few in the druid circle who used to rule Waterforge during its glory days, Waterforge was created by one powerful druid by the name Artakul. He chose this place for its abundant resources and grew from the deepest reaches of the ground, trees, stone and steel. For a druid, being able to control steel, he was shunned but this feat has saved countless lives in the oncoming war.   Unfortunately from both accounts, dates and most reasons have been omitted because of its military confidentiality.

The Glory Days

Unlike all the confidentiality, overwriting and desecration of its founding records. Its glory days were well recorded.   Druids took hold of Waterforge due to the constant conflict between dwarves and elves. In official documents and in public that is what it says but in actuality, the governing of Waterforge was split between many factions within Waterforge. The druids were acting like mediators, removing unnecessary conflict within the hierarchy. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that the druids were the reason Waterforge became famous or even nearly successful. Countless people from many races came to watch the spectacular architecture of wood stone and steel. Trade and industry boomed during this time and overflowed outwards beyond the walls of Waterforge.

Curse

One day, it is not known exactly when. The weather became cloudy. Then rained. And rained and rained. Never once has it stopped since that very day. Sometimes a very light drizzle, barely sprinkling. Sometimes a thick fog clouding the vision to the point of not being able to see your own feet (unless your are short). Sometimes a blanket of rain. Pouring as if the ocean itself apparated above Waterforge.   People left by the droves as they lost hope that the rain will one day stop. Druids tried all kinds of rituals. Clerics and sorcerers of great power tried to change the weather but the weather just above Waterforge was left uninterrupted. Diviners who tried to percieve the future of Waterforge could see nothing as if they drowned in the deepest and the darkest depth of water and drowned doing so. Druids and people of faith, seeing this as a sign of ancient and deep curse, left all they had in Waterforge and departed, never to set foot in Waterforge again. Those that still had pride in Waterforge gathered their tools and skills and started creating more room underground. Expanding the already existing tunnels to house the entirety of Waterforge.

Architecture

Largely, the entirety of Waterforge is built with stone and metal because of its unique climate. Ironically, the only part of old Waterforge architecture that still remains are outside of Waterforge.

Before Curse

After Curse

Districts

Due to the sudden changes in Waterforge's climate, the districts were moved underground and became more vertical.

Wet Roads

The Wet Roads was once the entirety of Waterforge. Now barren, empty and wet, these are wet and empty roads without names coursing though stone structures and waterlogged rotting trees. Most buildings are now cheap residences for the poor.

Water Gardens

Inner Sanctum

Living Quarters

Infrastructure

In the past, Waterforge was lush with greenery with all four seasons visible. Infrastructures such as windmills, watermills, forges and plantations were above ground and below ground, it had an efficient sewer system that was able to withstand the tropical rainforest's heavy rains.   Currently, due to its unique climate, the entirety of Waterforge is made up of waterways and underground passages. Waterforge's surface became barren and cobbled with stones, the sewers became waterways, that fed into the system further beneath to its lush undergardens, its denizens and the machineries deep underground.

Outer Waterforge

Everything that is outside the walls of Waterforge is outside the immediate effect of the curse of Waterforge, yet still is affected when the weathers are harsh. However because of the situation within Waterforge, this place as grown abundant with industry and agriculture.

Wet Roads

The surface of Waterforge is a maze of stone structures. Moss grows where the rain does not hit, the street lamp still function but now without ever turning off. The beautiful gardens are now bare cacophony of beautifully carved statues and walkways. There are several stairways leading into the inner sectors of Waterforge from the Wet Roads. Otherwise, the trees, dirt, sand and anything that either can be washed off with water or rotted with water is removed before it destroyed the beauty of the city.

Waterways

Just under the surface of Waterforge is the Waterways. Which used to be used as rain water drain and sewers before the curse flooded the sector. Now it is expanded and limited to rain water. Channeling the water through waterwheels and distributing it throughout the entirety of Waterforge's depths.

Stoneworks

This is where Waterforge exists. Under the surface between the Waterways. There are greathalls, roads, furnaces, houses of stone and wood, gardens, forests and farms.

Sewers

Further below Waterforge, a new sewer is built to handle enormous amount of rainwater and sewage.

Dungeons

Local tales and legends tell of a dungeon existing in Waterforge. The current one that is known publicly is not the same one in the legends as it is being used as a prison. But deep within Waterforge, it is told that there are things there which might prove why Waterforge was cursed forever.

Industry and Trade

Back in its glory days, Waterforge was highly renowned for its druids and its druidcraft. Any and all herbal medicines, potions, poisons and mystical companions were made and grown here. After the curse, all that glory is gone with the druids and all that remained were the steadfast dwarves and bitter elves. The dwarves showed unrelenting abilities in immaculate designs that could withstand any permanent curses while the elves' magic strengthened and brought Waterforge back to its former glory. Steel tools and magical artifacts reign supreme over the trade industry as alchemical supplies are not that abundant after the druids left.   Guilds and Factions Points of Interest

Ok, "Sometimes a thick fog clouding the vision to the point of not being able to see your own feet (unless your are short)" made me laugh. Interesting settlement! How do they manage to keep the rain water from getting underground?
