Sseth was born the cousin of the Emperor of Yuan-Ti. His name was Yang Zhu and he grew up a relatively ordinary member of the royal family. He received education in governance, military strategy, economics, court etiquette, combat, and everything else a young man of his station was expected to know. He excelled at his studies and was as wildly ambitious even more than the rest of his cousins, nephews, uncles, brothers, and other relations. His family was proud of him when he was named the court chancellor, advising the Emperor in matters of law and diplomacy. He was expected to go far, maybe he would even be named governor of one of the major provinces in the empire.
Yang Zhu had other plans, however. He believed himself more capable of rule than anyone else in his family, especially the Emperor's eldest son who spent his days carousing and chasing skirts. He knew he was too far down the line of succession to murder his way onto the throne, and his branch of the family had no major holdings, so raising an army would be hard. But he was a mystic at heart and magic had always interested him.
At first, he buried himself in books, learning basic cantrips at first, and mastering some more powerful spells after years of study. But his progress was slow and he desired power now. He buried himself in books once more, this time in search of a faster way to gain power. He read of warlocks and pacts with eldritch beings, and gods whose worship was forbidden. He stumbled upon a name, Tiamat, the sister of Bahamut who was loved so dearly by the masses. She would be perfect for his designs. He used his considerable wealth and connections, as well as some smooth maneuvering, to join her sect and shoot through the ranks. In a few years, he was the de-facto leader of the sect of Tiamat in Yuan-Ti, and his progress did not go unnoticed.
The Goddess noticed him and humored him with an audience. Yang Zhu groveled and begged to be granted great powers, and Tiamat accepted in exchange for his soul and undying loyalty. Sseth was born, a massive snake-like creature, with wings and the power to corrupt humanoids and grant them psionic powers.
He used his newfound power to perform a coup in Yuan-Ti and proceeded to create a massive army of corrupted reptilian soldiers. First, he conquered his world, but his greed and ambition knew no bounds, so Tiamat showed him how to travel between worlds. He pillaged and conquered world after world until his Goddess called on him again. He was to attack the Feywild and rebuild the Nexus to bring back Tiamat's faithful dragons, who had been lost so long ago.
The Yuan-Ti campaign in the Feywild was going perfectly until Bahamut himself intervened along with a group of intrepid heroes. The adventurers, with powers granted by Bahamut, defeated and killed Sseth at the siege of O'Ellennor, causing the destruction of his armies.
