Umbra Tenebris

Also known as the Shadow of Darkness, this is the feudal kingdom of Marat Samael the Spirit Monger. The territory of Umbra Tenebris stretches spans over nine hundred closely neighboring systems, most of which were crafted by Marat Samael himself.

Culture:

The culture of Umbra Tenebris is largely agrarian with the peasants living on acreages of 20 acres or with access to alternative resources such as being a lakefront location. Peasants tend to live simple lives in which they utilize their skills in farming, husbandry, fishing, and carpentry to support themselves. Peasants have limited access to the knowledge of magick but utilize several techniques in their daily lives in place of technology in aiding with their tasks. Peasants are capable of attaining wealth and status among their peers based on their skills and intellect, and the gifted among their ranks can ascend to the ranks of skilled craftsmen and nobility.   The craftsmen live in the cities, citadels, and palaces of the lords. Sculptors, painters, musicians, blacksmiths, swordsmiths, goldsmiths, innkeepers, chefs, bakers, brewers, alchemists, enchanters, and physicians. They produce and provide the luxuries and advanced necessities for the rest of society and serve as the middle class. Goldsmiths are among the most wealthy by nature of their trade, minting the currency of the kingdom along with luxury items such as jewelry. Their peers among the craftsmen in other trades can potentially attain equal prominence depending on their skills. They are permitted advanced studies in forms of magick that relate to their fields of work.   The guardsmen live in the cities, citadels, and palaces in addition to patrolling the territories of their lord/lady's fiefdom. They are responsible for providing a standing presence to be watchful for and react to any criminal activity. The guardsmen are the most common patrons of both the swordsmiths and brewers. Though their pay is set lower than even successful peasants, they possess a significant degree of authority and command the respect of peasants and craftsmen. Guardsmen are allowed to study the offensive forms of magick that are largely regulated among the lower classes. Guards uniquely pay no taxes and have food and medical care provided for them, their spouses, and children for their duties on top of their pay.   The noble lords/ladies rule over the fiefdoms that comprise the territories of the kingdom. They collect a 5% tax on all profits or production within their fief and are responsible for ensuring that the law is upheld and order maintained within their territory. The nobility is also the master sorcerers of the kingdom. All members of a noble household are required to study the schools of magick and in order to inherit the title of Lord or Lady one must prove themselves adept in multiple schools of magick to earn it. The nobility is tasked with expanding the available knowledge to the lower classes through the development of new and appropriate techniques of utilizing magick but are not barred from pursuing research that would be withheld from the lower classes.

Economy:

The economy of Umbra Tenebris is centered around the denominations of currency known as the Umbra, a silver coming weighing one ounce, and the Marat, a gold coin weighing an ounce. A Marat is worth ten Umbra. Both were printed with the emblem and likeness of Marat Samael. Beyond this, bartering is regularly utilized where gold is lacking or unnecessary for the parties involved.   The average value of the Umbra in the economy is room and board for a night at an inn. The average cost of an unenchanted sword is a hundred Marat, while a Mastercraft sword may cost as much as ten thousand.   The average pay of citizens of Umbra Tenebris before expenses: peasants average two Marat a day, craftsmen average out to ten Marat a day, guards average out to a Marat, and Lords/Ladies average out to two thousand Marat a day.

Military:

There is no formal military organization within Umbra Tenebris. Instead, the lawful order is maintained through guards hired and directed by their Lord/Lady in order to protect against criminals and predators. While the guards have an internal hierarchy of ranks based on their experience and favor with their Lord/Lady, to the general populace they are indistinguishable from their fellow guards who are all viewed as possessing equal authority.   The equipment of the military is standardized in its aesthetic appearance, with new guards being provided swords, armor, and boots. The guards themselves often seek to supplement their basic equipment by investing in the crafting of higher quality weapons and armor of similar aesthetic designs, often selling their generic equipment to recover a portion of the cost of passing them on to close family.   The guards specialize in the study of offensive forms of magick in the schools of alchemy and incantation. Beyond this, they regularly have their weapons and armor inscribed with runic enchantments.
