The Luminari

The last remnants of the lost Kingdom of Sindari. Commonly known as the Nari. The Nari people are dedicated to the annihilation of the Mari, who destroyed the Sindari Kingdom, and to the destruction of all magickal life within the galaxy. Despite their distaste for the magickal, they utilize Evocation, Alchemy, and Runic magick in order to achieve their aims. The monastic society of the Nari people is ruled by a hierarchy determined by knowledge and experience, typically resulting in senior positions being filled by the elders of the society. The highest-ranking individuals of the Nari hierarchy are known collectively as the Convocation, with the individuals composing the Convocation holding the title of Sancire.   Scattered across the smatterings of galactic space on the outskirts of the lost Kingdom of Sindari, their people live in colonies rarely rising above a million individuals in any one system. They inhabit a range of planetary bodies, orbital stations, and migratory ships.

Hierarchy:

Sancire: The highest authority of the hierarchy, known collectively as the Convocation. Typically the eldest and always the most accomplished of the Nari people, who must have successfully recited the Canticum Vitae. Typically semi-retired from active duty in terms of carrying out objectives outside of dire need due to age or accumulated injuries.   Altha: The honored rank of those who have recited the Canticum Vitae. They are the most accomplished healers and alchemists among the Nari people. Members of the Altha rank are responsible for cultivating and maintaining stores of alchemical ingredients. The Altha are permitted the autonomy to eschew active duty in favor of serving as healers, smiths, and alchemists for the Luminari.   Senex: The direct subordinates to the Sancire, composed of the most talented of the Nari people. They are responsible for delegating the directives of the Sancire and directly handling the most important aspects of these directives and dangerous aspects within conflicts.   Adeptus: Distinguished ranking members of the hierarchy, composed of those who have performed the Ritual of Servitium and h either significant experience or accomplishments among the Nari people. The Adeptus is issued the most difficult tasks that are not handled directly by the Senex. Adeptus serve as commanding officers in large conflicts.   Bellator: The rank and file members of the hierarchy, composed of those who have performed the Ritual of Vita but have yet to distinguish themselves through their accomplishments or through the accumulation of experience among the Nari people. They are semi-autonomous and capable of taking the initiative to engage in their own operations in order to gain experience and seek to distinguish themselves through notable accomplishments. They can be called upon to aid the Adeptus when necessary and are required to come to the defense of their people in conflict.   Proles: The young and unproven members of the hierarchy, typically composed of those too young or incapable to perform the Ritual of Vita. Lacking authority to act as independent adults with their own volition and barred from serving in conflicts. Proles serve as craftsmen of various fields from the age of ten to produce basic amenities for the Nari people.   Abdico: The rank of fugitives, defectors, and undesirables that have failed in their attempt to recite the Ritual of Vitae and survived the effects that befell them.

Ritual Evocations:

Ritual of Vita: A coming of age ritual evocation, required to be learned and spoken by a Prole in order to be considered an adult and be elevated to the rank of Bellator. The evocation is a lengthy and intricate recitation, requiring time or exceptional intelligence to memorize, and has disastrous effects on the individual attempting it if unsuccessful through error or incompletion. If successful, the evocation permanently increases the strength, agility, dexterity, and endurance of the individual to levels that are comparable to the average Mari. It also diminishes the effects of the basic abilities and powers of Empyrean magick which the Mari typically possess.   Ritual of Servitium: An expanded version of the Vita evocation, it is required to be memorized and recited in order to be eligible for earning the rank of Adeptus. This evocation expands the individual's defenses against a wider range of abilities and powers of Empyrean magick which the Mari possess, both typical and rare. The Servitium evocation allows an individual to consciously shield themselves against greater damage than is achieved passively.   Canticum Vitae: The Song of Life, the compendium of evocations used for healing and for performing alchemy among the Nari. It is a requirement to be memorized and recited properly in order to achieve the ranked of Altha and to be eligible for the rank of Sancire.   Canticum Mortis: The Song of Death, the compendium of evocations permitted to be used in conflict. Learning any portion of the song is forbidden to those below the rank of Adeptus. Learning the forbidden knowledge of the song is the most common reason that an individual is proclaimed an Abdico.

Economy:

The economy of the Nari people revolves around the Altha, as a monastic society there is no form of currency and instead the Altha and the Proles are obliged by the duty of their rank to provide the necessary and authorized equipment, provision, and aid to any Nari of good standing. The Altha provide weapons, armor, shields, elixirs, poisons, and medical treatment. The Proles provide food, bedrolls, blankets, clothing, footwear, pottery, utensils, construction, materials, and maintenance.   This results in an economy of job classes, where less time-consuming and laborious jobs are valued, primarily among the proles. The highly skilled in particular areas are able to corner the demand, resulting in the less skilled receiving the more laborious and time-consuming tasks. As a result, some individuals become so consumed in their work that they are unable to complete their initiation into Bellator rank with the Ritual of Vita and remain Proles for the duration of their life.
