Hybrid

Basic Information

Anatomy

The only case of dragonspawn where the non-dragon parent is favored, hybrids still present a near-infinite degree of variation of traits. The most universal presentation is in eye color- even shades natural to humans will be particularly vibrant, and upon a closer inspection (as in, sustained eye contact), one will notice the iris is larger than a human's as well. Unnatural shades- particularly red or violet- are fairly frequent as well. Many hybrids also present with scales, though it's virtually unheard of for any generations after the dragon's direct descendant to exhibit true metallic or mineral-type scales (the Lane family of Goldport being the only known exception, with a 5th generation member born with true gold scales, marking them as the only verifiable dragonborn family in the known world).   First and second generation hybrids also have a chance- though rare- to be born with extra appendages. Most commonly a tail, though cases of wings (size and functionality highly variable) are well-documented. Some were said to have horns, some claws, and there are at least three verified cases of a direct descendant showing digitigrade leg structure. Despite this, stories of hybrids capable of flight are rare, and thought to be exaggeration over time.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

  • Strongly hued eyes, larger irises
  • Slightly larger, sharper canine teeth
  • Often have leaner, sharper faces in earlier generations.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Varies- usually only slightly more advanced than normal human capabilities, though there are enough who show greatly enhanced or detracted senses that it can't be chalked up to mere chance. Many direct descendants were said to show an advanced aptitude for magic- whether this is true or not is debatable, but it's certain to not extend into second and later generations.   (First generation descendants are often extremely magically gifted- generation of fire, manipulation of wind to allow for true flight, healing, creation of gems and metal, growth of plants... the list goes on and on. They also frequently exhibited shapeshifting capabilities- nine cases out of ten, they could only go between a humanoid and draconic form, or varying degrees of in between, though there are very rare cases where a hybrid can shapeshift into completely different forms as well.)

Civilization and Culture

History

Of all the species they encountered, dragons seemed to take up most with humans. Why? Hell if anyone knows.   As common as such pairings were in the early years, their progeny were... slightly less so, it was often a 50/50 chance whether or not their children would prove viable. There were enough born (and the traits still popping up even today) to make their presence undeniable, but it is believed now that many of their traits were exaggerated; or that many were more the result of humans who'd experimented too much with transmogrification and permanently altered their very genetic makeup.
Genetic Ancestor(s)
Scientific Name
N/A
Lifespan
Direct draconic descended hybrids can be nigh-immortal; second generation and further can live between one and two hundred years.
Average Height
Anything less than 6'0 is virtually unheard of in direct descendants, second generation and further are within standard human ranges.
Average Physique
  • Often a bit lanky- neck and limbs usually being longer than normal; less prominent in later generations
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
  • Standard human skin tones
  • Scales can present in any color, though usually not quite as vibrant as true dragons
  • Usually scaling is limited to one color (with some shade variations), but two or three is not uncommon in earlier generations. Unheard of for it to go beyond four distinct colors.
