Spore Island

The Island

"Point Sparrow," or "Spore Island," is an island of large magic mushrooms located in the Central-Pacific, just east of Colonia along the Great Fault. The island gives off a faint purple glow in the night, mostly from its resident inhabitants who largely reside in the ground, which rises through the night sky. The island is predominantly populated by small and large mushroom peoples known as "The Children of the Spore" (or, simply, "Spores"), ranging wildly in size, shape, and color.   The island's geography is rather simple; rising out of the warm Pacific, the island is largely treeless, vegetation largely replaced by mushrooms ranging in size from minuscule to the size of full-grown oaks. The beaches of the island are the only portion of landmass not covered by mushrooms or their spores, and are frequently the homes to nesting animals and seabirds, which are largely left alone by the mushroom population.   The most notable aspect of the island is a large cavernous opening in the north-western portion of the island. Protected on three sides by large sheer cliff-faces, the entrance winds deep below the island, where it opens into a massive cavern in which "The Great Spore" resides.

The Cavern

The Cavern is the central home to most of the Spore people who reside on the island. The expansive opening deep under the island spreads in all directions, with tunnels going on for unimaginable distances deep into the ground. Plateaus and platforms, connected by mushroom and fibrous bridges, surround the center of the cavern and twirl down towards the bottom, and it is here where much of the activity of the island can be found.   While the Spore people are not particularly active, they do perform a selection of ritualistic religious activities where they participate in dancing, flapping of the gills, screeching, clapping, swaying and bouncing. A group of Mushroom Shaman can be routinely found surrounding the "Great Spore" and it's island, and they are often seen participating in religious chanting, humming, and dancing. They are known for their ability to perform all forms of magic, though they are largely unwilling to provide examples when non-spores are present.

The Populous

The people of Spore Island, commonly known as "Spores" (though, in their own language, they prefer the term "Children of the Everlasting Spore, it who giveth and taketh"), are a rather odd group of peoples. Appearing in all shapes and sizes, most of them pleasant though some aggressive, the Spores largely mind their own business and do not pay any mind to friendly or neutral travelers. Some of their people, particularly those with glowing purple caps, are more aggressive; these Spores are the majority population of the above-ground portion of the island, and when agitated will quickly rise from the ground (a "pop" noise is noted) and smack or assail the offending passer-by.   While mostly pleasant, they have a deep disdain for what they call the "pink ones who demand sacrifices," which some have connected to the Japanese. They also do not like "the great metal beasts which bring the pink ones to our fibers."

The Great Spore

"The Great Spore," appears to be the central hub of the island. A massive mushroom standing over 100 feet tall with glowing purple gills and the ability to move itself and bend as a human would its back, the Great Spore possesses a seemingly intelligent but apprehensions consciousness. Able to connect through the minds of humanoids and communicate with them telepathically, the Great Spore is rather wary of travelers. Upon first interaction with the group, the Great Spore continually asked if "You pink ones wished for more sacrifices," seemingly referencing previous visitors to the island. When told by the party that they did not seek any form of "sacrifice," the Great Spore was immensely happy, waving from side to side.   The Great Spore appears, as well, to have some control of the area immediately outside of the island. When the party asked for the Spore's help in destroying the great concrete pillars preventing their submarine from continuing forward into Japanese territory, the Great Spore agreed, causing the concrete pillars to collapse. The Great Spore asked for one thing in return; that if the party found any Spores outside of the island that they would pledge to help them return.

History

It is said by the people of Spore Island that they established themselves on their uncharted island "sometime before the one hundredth cycle of the moon." They remark that they were discovered by "the pink ones with the great metal sea monsters" approximately "six or eight moons ago."
