Wizards
Wizards typically focus on their school of choice, which is the result of and a reinforcement of their personalities. Wizard schools can be focused or diverse, and with the demand for magically produced goods and geomancy, wizards have no trouble finding gainful employment. Most parents dream of having a child accepted into a wizarding academy. The schools as presented in the PHB tend to be favored by some races, which I’ll list below, as well as discussing the other two types of wizard.
Abjuration - Favored by dwarves, humans
Conjuration - Favored by gnomes, dwarves
Enchantment - Favored by elves and hobbits
Divination - Favored by orcs and goblins
Illusion - Favored by elves and humans
Necromancy - Favored by humans
Evocation - Favored by orcs and humans
Transmutation - Favored by hobbits and dwarves
War Wizards are typically employed by governments and act as mobile artillery pieces. Most learn early on that subtlety is preferable in the opening salvos; defending wizards will seek out their adversaries and do their best to counter disintegrate or other damaging spells, and making oneself a target early on is poor planning. War wizards often use support magic until a critical moment when they open up on their foes.
Bladesingers are elven wizards who blend swordplay with magic; for high elves, this is the perfect elven class. Most high elven royalty trains in this school. Being the most well suited to wizardry, high elves practice all styles (and have invented most wood elves rarely take this path but typically choose the Bird Style, while drow gravitate towards the Serpent Style. Eladrin almost always take one of the Cat Styles and sea elves have developed their own unique form, the Shark Style, involving tridents and illusory magic. Shadar-kai also have their own variety, though it’s rarely seen.
