Rogues

Despite their reputation, rogues aren’t always villainous or even mischievous. Granted, more than enough are to color the general public’s perception, but nevertheless, rogues find themselves at all levels of society.   Thieves are the most notorious and also the first to come to mind when one thinks of rogues. Rarely on the right side of the law, some thieves do find work with legitimate government contacts retrieving stolen property, but more often than not they form thieves’ guilds and live a life of larceny, if adventure doesn’t suit them.   Assassins as a category of rogue attract little attention, as there are other classes who kill for money and all try to be discreet. Powerful individuals often know how to contact assassin guilds, and in a small handful of places they may practice openly, instilling fear in the general public.   Arcane Tricksters combine magic and dextrous talent into a diverse package well suited for exploring ruins and dungeons. Though only sometimes sponsored by governments, these rogues are nevertheless highly sought after by adventuring groups.   Inquisitives are considered rogues by most people, though they are quite skillful (and wiser cynics mutter that they know the criminal mind rather well). Often finding work with the city watch or as private investigators, Inquisitives are the least likely among rogues to resort to crime.   Masterminds run organizations extremely well, often legitimate organizations at that, though their personal prowess in no lesser for their often opulent lifestyles. Indeed, getting near the type makes one more and more of a target, keeping Masterminds sharp.   Swashbucklers are romantic figures best known for engaging in piracy (some of which is privateering), or for duels in the street. Savvy opponents, these rogues are experts at taking down better armed and armored foes in the crowded streets of port cities and lurching ship decks alike.   Scouts are similar to rangers in some respects, though they spend less time in the wild (and seem to relish it less). Often serving ahead of armies, these rogues sow what chaos they can before reporting back dutifully on the enemy composition.
