Gods of Death

This grouping of deities is tricky. Death is an inevitable facet of life, and deities who oversee the transition to death or funerary rites exist in all groups. The primordial or primordials responsible for the Thirteen Sarcophagi in the Shadowfell are different, in that their death enabled the cycle in the universe to begin with. It’s unknown how the deities of death are formed, whether they animate a deceased primordial shard or take on the divine spark of a still living primordial piece. Sages debate about the matter endlessly, but the fact remains that the deities of death are often inextricably linked to the Shadowfell, setting them apart from other gods. They tend to be evil, though typically this is not out of malice but rather a cool indifference.   The Morrigan - The Triple Goddess of War and Fate. Domains: Arcana, Grave, Solidarity, War Bearing such an uncanny resemblance to the Raven Queen that most assume the two are one, The Morrigan is a goddess closely tied to death on the battlefield, knowing the appointed time of each warrior. Her aspects vary based on who tells about them, but she is a popular deity among rural warriors. She leans Neutral Evil, though she is not overly malicious.   Huitzilopochtli - God of War, Sun, and Sacrifice. Domains: Grave, Light, Strength, War One of the few specific deities worshipped by a large body of orcs (primarily the Smoke Jaguars), Huitzilopochtli is favored by other societies who practice humanoid sacrifice. He is said to be so bright that warriors may only glimpse him through holes in their shields; he is the patron of several cities, and is honored regularly by tlachtli games and attendant sacrifices. Warriors who die in battle and women who die in childbirth go on to join him in the afterlife as hummingbirds. He leans Lawful Evil.   Xipe Totec - God of Spring, Corn, and Metalworkers. Domains: Forge, Grave, Nature, Order Xipe Totec is the Flayed God, and favors metal workers (particularly gold) as well as all who work with corn. Because legend states that he flayed himself and threw gobbets of his own flesh to create corn, sacrifices to him are similarly grisly, and few outside the Three Sisters choose to venerate him. He leans Neutral Evil, and definitely has a malicious streak.   The Raven Queen - Goddess of Death. Domains: Grave, Life, Trickery A mysterious figure alluded to or outright worshipped everywhere in the world, The Raven Queen is rumored to be the ascended aspect of one of the Neverborn, though there’s no way to confirm this. She has acquired a unique brand of warlock and seems to have full domain over the Shadowfell, and even those who worship others will make a token offering to her at funerals. She is staunchly true Neutral.   Ereshkigal - Queen of the Dead. Domains: Grave, Nature, Order, Zeal Ereshkigal is an old deity, representing not only the great expanse of the Underworld but also the cyclical nature of the seasons. Stories of her are manifold and often contradictory, but her devoted clergy continue their duties undeterred. She leans Lawful Evil, but is not malicious.   Mictlantecuhtli - God of the Underworld. Domains: Grave, Knowledge, Order For those who live on the Three Sisters, there are three varieties of soul; normal deaths, heroic deaths, and bad deaths. Mictlantecuhtli is the only god who oversees all three. He has little love for other deities, and is one of the few gods whom the undead can openly worship; venerating him often involves cannibalism. He leans Chaotic Evil.   Marit Lage - Goddess of the Void and Transitions. Domains: Ambition, Arcana, Tempest The ancient being imprisoned within the moon lies dreaming, and its dreams are Marit Lage, the Cosmic Daughter, born and distinct from the nameless entity writhing in the dark. She herself was once imprisoned on earth in the deepest recesses of the sea, but her apotheosis has unleashed her will on the world through her followers. Though more god than primordial, her worshippers still invoke fear in others, and warlocks still bind themselves to her pacts. (She is the source of kraken priests.) She leans Neutral Evil.   Ratri - Goddess of the Night, and Thieves. Domains: Ambition, Trickery With few deities of thievery openly worshipped, Ratri has cornered the market, and hears the prayers of nearly every knowledgeable thief in the world. Nary a guild run by rogues would be remiss in offering her devotion and setting up a small shrine to her. She leans Neutral Evil, but is not malicious.   Vecna - God of undeath and liches. Domains: Arcana, Forge, Knowledge A textbook case of mortal ambition resulting in apotheosis, Vecna is credited as being the first lich, though he attained this state so long ago that no one knows if it’s true (or even what race he was before). After spending centuries as a lich he amassed enough power to challenge a god and assume its position; because of a betrayal by his vampire lieutenant, parts of Vecna are still to be found in the world as artifacts. He leans Chaotic Evil.
