Clerics

Clerics obviously serve different gods or philosophies, and as such find themselves as members of established ecclesiarchies or churches fairly often. Still, Domains impact clerical outlook a great deal, and even members of the same church who align with different aspects of their deity can have very different worldviews.   Arcana clerics see how magic suffuses everything in existence, from the ether between worlds to the objects we use everyday, which are just waiting to be enchanted or transmuted. Magic to them is analogous to chi or prana, and those who can work their will upon the universe itself are held in high esteem. Arcana clerics often serve at mixed temples/workshops or universities for wizards and oversee churches which count wizards, warlocks, sorcerers, and bards among their number.   Forge clerics understand the complexity of all things, and how the gods and planes themselves constructed all that we know and interact with through processes and laws. Life itself has grown to complexity over time, as commune spells revealed, relentlessly forged on the anvil of nature itself by the hammer of the Great Goddess. Forge clerics believe in creating strong communities and actively work towards this goal, often coming together for this purpose. Obviously craftsmen of all sorts frequently attend Forge churches, but scholars find themselves here as well.   Grave clerics run the gamut from fearsome iconoclasts on the fringe of polite society to the most critical holy men and women in a culture. Tied heavily to ancestor cults and various funerary rites, grave clerics see all of existence as transitory and great cycles of death and rebirth. In some cities, they keep to themselves, while in others they hold important positions of power.   Knowledge clerics see the world as a series of mysteries and puzzles, forever looping around each other and towards a center of sublime understanding. Knowledge domain clerics are almost always produced by civilization, even if they venture out into the world. Wizards, bards, and scholars often associate with these clerics, though certain fighters and other classes are also drawn to them. Knowledge clerics often convene to share what they’ve learned or create great centers of learning.   Life clerics view the world as an entity unto itself, slowly waking up. Life endures. Life ends only to feed other life. Life grows more aware, more connected, more enlightened. Understandably, life clerics are universally popular, valued for their healing and commitment to the integrity of their communities. Members of all races and classes can be found at churches of Life, and the only enmity they have towards anyone or anything is that they reserve for the undead. You may not select this domain if you are of Evil alignment.   Light clerics understand that light is the source of all things. It is the perfection from which all forms are derived; it feeds the plants which feed all other life, it emanates from the source of the gods themselves. Even magic relies on the energies first granted by the sun. Though Life clerics are marginally more popular, Light clerics are right behind, generally well regarded wherever they may be. They tend to be less pacifist, however.   Nature clerics differ from druids in that the latter see their responsibility to nature as paramount, while the former seek to better integrate mortals and nature. Nature clerics understand the importance of balance and the natural world, but spend far more time directing mortal communities to best live in harmony. They work together very well with most druids, and count more civilized rangers among their flocks, along with frontier settlements throughout creation.   Order clerics understand better than anyone how chaos and order clash to enmesh all of creation, and though they know better than any how chaos will always exist as a pole creating a necessary dichotomy, they have chosen to stand against it as best they can, to promote balance. Order is beneficial to the growth of individuals and communities alike, and the longer it can be sustained, the better those living within it will be. For obvious reasons, you must be of a Lawful alignment to select this domain.   Tempest clerics understand that the world is change, constant and indifferent. The storm is a manifestation of this, but all things are constantly in motion, and learning to attune oneself to the rhythm and flows of change is important. Most often found at seaside communities, tempest clerics assist people at the coast (and other boundaries) with the massive changes in their lives, lessening some change and visiting change upon others.   Trickery clerics see society for what it is, layers of illusion which people accept as laws, and laws as the means by which those in power retain power. The world functions similarly on a cosmic scale, and trickery clerics see behind the scenes, laughing all the way; most people don’t like their comfort so boldly challenged however, so trickery clerics are often very discreet. Some cultures value their wisdom (even if they keep them at arm’s length), but others are openly hostile.   War clerics understand that life is struggle. A society might struggle against another society, mortals might struggle against the gods, or an individual might struggle against their destiny; regardless, the ability to endure such struggle is important, and war clerics are popular additions to militant communities and military companies alike.
