Archfey

There are laws, stipulations on behavior and excuses for punishment that mortals craft for themselves, and there are Laws, governing statutes that dictate how the multiverse functions. Laws are bound up in entities and these entities have gone to war, been destroyed, or altered themselves, leaving shattered worlds in their wake. Despite this, the grand entities responsible for the growth toward and separation from the Great Divine have long shepherded souls, those ambiguous fractions of awareness and conscience, on towards the grand reconciliation at the end of all things. By some curious twist, echoes of awareness pooled in the recesses of the multiverse before the Principles, and during the Differentiation some remained unadulterated. As Primordials grew dimmer and the nascent gods grew wiser, the Unsouled plucked at strands of Laws woven into the multiverse, and discovered how to make of them a tapestry. Archfey are these beings, woven together from laws and pledges and oaths; their power is their limitation, as though every piece of metaphorical armament were an anchor weighing them down to a defined multiverse. Archfey are fascinated by creatures with souls, particularly elves and gnomes, who seem to have an affinity for the Feywild despite being mortal. Many creatures are defined as ‘fey’ though it would be more accurate to say they’re spirits of nature, and even if several are Unsouled they’ll became a part of their lands when they perish. The Archfey are master architects and have woven complex stories and laws and rituals for their own inscrutable reasons, and most people forget that these bizarre beings are playing a part, mere stories wrapped in gossamer flesh; they will play these parts to the hilt, even at the expense of all reason.   Titania, Queen of the Fey - The grand Queen of the Fey is mother to all dryads, matron of satyrs, the Queen of the Change Between Seasons and Mistress of Spirit. Just as the Raven Queen is believed to be a manifestation of a Neverborn risen to godhood and Marit Lage is similarly a goddess born of Emrakul, some believe that Titania is an archfey tied to Gaia herself, representing in many ways her complimentary opposite. It’s no wonder that Titania is credited with mothering the myriad fey spirits and even the elves themselves. She’s less inscrutable than the others, which is to say she has the tempestuous nature of Nature itself but is guileless; one can always tell her mood as they approach, and alone among the archfey, her moods seem genuine. Warlocks who appeal to Titania find that as they use their powers to charm others, they begin feeling charmed themselves; many is the tale of a suitor charming their beloved until the former’s love grew so great, that the inevitable failure of the charm spell left them beyond devastated.   Aaqa, the Wind Duke - Aaqa is every bit the proud noble warrior, from his crisp uniform to his formal manner. He proudly bears the scars from duels over matters of honor (which he has never lost), and addresses everyone formally, seeming to have a keen intuition for one’s rank and status. He is the Duke of Winds and of the Autumn, a ruthless general without peer and a gentleman in every sense in court. Warlocks of Aaqa often develop a degree of haughtiness (if none existed before), and push to see themselves elevated socially. To their credit, Aaqa is generally regarded as a favorable patron for warlocks, and those with whom he makes a pact receive far less scrutiny than most.   Mab, Duchess of the Sun - Midwife, warrior, and hellion all describe Mab, the Summer Queen (Titania be damned) and Dame of Fires, Driver of the Sun Chariot and its guardian in the Land Below. She is wild and assertive, clearly modeled after huntress goddesses (or perhaps the archetype which inspired such goddesses to form or ascend). She is brash. She demands respect. She punishes arrogant men by transforming them into wildlife and then hunting them until they die afraid. Warlocks of Mab grow more and more hot headed as time goes on, eventually wielding their powers against the slightest provocation, unless they have the will to reign themselves in.   Cernunnos, the Horned One - The rebirth of the world takes place in the spring, and Cernunnos is Duke of Spring, Patron of Water, Lord of Beasts. He is actually venerated by some peoples as an archetype, though his part is that of a lustful, bestial being, and the archfey is concerned with little else. His warlocks often start giving in to their urges more readily, particularly lustful urges.   Lolth, the Demon Queen - Lady of Winter and Stone, Lolth is a demon queen and a duchess of the archfey, as well as matron to the drow. How she can be all these things is a complete enigma, and even the most devoted elven sages can’t begin to piece together the mystery. Regardless, her warlocks grow increasingly secretive and paranoid, a trait valued by those who guard against That Which Slumbers.   Others The Fey of the Court are the most benign, even if they don’t seem it, as they encompass broad tales and have some flexibility within their rigid tapestries. Other archfey lurk in the Feywild, and they’re absolutely of the super-fucking-creepy-Changeling-the-Lost variety. Old grandmothers who punish the oldest child and spoil the youngest child and no one knows what happens to these kidnapped children when they’re no longer children, or the Clockwork Doctor, ot any number of others limited and finite and constrained in their incomprehensible depravity might all be approached.
