The Dunai Baronies

The Duna Baronies are a collection of smaller "fiefdoms" in the South continent on the Western Landmass of Pater. The government is known as a "Kleptocracy" to most of the population of Pater. The extremely decadent wealth of the population belongs to a relatively small percentage, with the majority of the wealth controlled by the noble families, most of whom control Baronies within the territory. Each of these Baronies were controlled by a single Baron, who would act as a landlord on behalf of the Arch Baron.

The Baronies

There are Seven Baronies within the kingdom itself, each one controlled by one of the wealth families.
The Winsteads - Textiles, Slave Trading and Spices
The Von Burens - Slaves Trading
The Whites - Slave Trading, Textiles
The Bolshoy - General Labour, Luxury Goods, Mining
The Muirreans - Luxury foods and wines
The Rafters - Information, Military Contracts
The Dunai - Slave Trading, Spices, Controlling family (Arch Baron)
The Dunai family control the town of Dunai, and have done since the "Unification" across Pater years before.

Economy

The main economy within the Baronies is powered by a combination of trade and internal heavy taxation. The majority of the wealth is channeled into the military conflict with the Aldaran Conclave up to the North. A huge amount of trade income is attributed to the sale and export of Silk, Spices and luxury items such as gold and silver. Many of the profits go directly to the ruling families, as the majority of the labour within the Baronies is comprised of some slaves, and mostly indentured servants. Many of whom were taken from the surrounding tribes and families that made up the kingdom prior to the unification.

Slavery

Within the Baronies, slavery and indentured servitude is the primary source of labour. Contrary to outside opinion, many of the slaves are treated quite well compared to a typical slave from years prior. After several stalled rebellions, the Baronies came to an agreement with the various guilds and agreed to allow for a degree of social services to be set up. Each slave is entitled to a home space, provided by the houses, and must receive a good compensation of services, usually in the form of an allowance each month, and must be provided with meals each day. However, they must not leave the Baronies under any circumstance, and they are marked with an arcana tattoo on their cheek as a sign of ownership. Many of the slaves are in high demand across the continent as high end and luxury assistants, maids, butlers, batmen, and footmen due to their high level of standards, and relatively good health.
Slaves can earn their freedom in several ways. They can apply within their house to perform military duties on a system of credits. After they accumulate enough credits, they can spend them on a series of benefits, such as their freedom, their families freedom, or potentially apply for a more substantial position and potentially accumulate wealth. However this latter option is not well received by the other nobles, and often the individual who has been raised finds themselves without friends, wealth, or worse off than they were as a slave.
Slaves are often also subjects to Non Judicial Punishment by their owners, often indiscriminate, and non regulated.
The slaves may appoint an Overseer who liases with the owners, bringing them issues to resolve if need be as a representative.

Pre-Unification

Before the War of the Five Kingdoms, the baronies comprised of several hundred families, each trying to collectivise under their own leadership. Prior to the unification, a struggle broke out between the seven major families, who had managed to accumulate their forces into stronger, more unified groups. These groups waged war over several years trying to take over the kingdom, before peace talks were eventually put forward. The Dunai family had accumulated the majority of the territory to the north, and through a very tense negotiation, assumed control, under threat of a total blockade to the northern straight access.
The city known as Jaeger was eventually renamed to "Dunai" and is now the main functioning capital of the Baronies.
