Introduction : Karlok was an Imp living in the dream world. He strongly believed that all things were connected to each other and everything was in a fine balance all over the universe. For many of his fellow sorcerers, he was an eccentric, a profane that had no idea how magic worked. The theory of magic at the time was that the energy from magic was infinite and coming directly from the fairies, but the theories of Karlok were that the magic was like a stream surrounding them. Karlok was not able to prove his theories, but nonetheless he lived his life maintaining the perfect balance of all the energies he took and all he gave.
Comfortably living in the dream world, the imps were slowly recovering from their years of "slavery" under the fist of the eternal court. They were trying to better understand their environment with the help of the other fairies that remained into the dream world. The popular theory at the time was that the dream magic was coming directly from the fairies themselves. This theory was particularly popular among the pixies, who had proposed this explanation.
Karlok was a young student of dream magic. The young imp was quickly turning the pages of a big book while taking notes on a piece of parchment. Hearing a little snoring, he raised his head a few seconds to notice his master was fast asleep on the desk, again. He smiled, at least he wouldn't interrupt his progress with his ravings on how dream magic worked. The young prodigy was on the verge of a very important discovery. He was going to disprove all the theories he had been studying for the past eight years. He had tried many times to complete those equations in the past weeks, but always his master was giving him worthless lectures or recite those false theories ad nausea. At least when he was asleep, Karlok could work how he wanted. He liked his mentor, he was praised as one of the few experts on magic the city of Imps had. But he couldn't understand what his young apprentice was workig on. How could he? The venerable professor had spent his entire life believing dream magic was an infinite pool of energy the fairies had in themselves and they could train like a muscle in their brain. Karlok knew better, he had carefully studied the Imps anatomy during the lectures and the dissections. The Imps didn't have any organ specifically tied to the use of magic. Besides, the equations were not correct. He dropped his quill, the ink made a blur on the side of the parchment, but it was there. The equations he had tried to disprove all those weeks. His hearth was racing, but he needed to confirm he didn't make any mistakes, like the last time his mind was wandering around while he was working. with trembling hands, he took hold of his quill again. He slowly began revising, there was no doubt about it, he was right. What if his book had a transcription error ? He glanced at the desk where his mentor was fast asleep, another copy of the book was laying there. He swiftly raised from his chair and tip toed towards the table, he took hold of the book the professor was sleeping on and he pulled. With a thud and a groan he had the book, fortunately the old imp was sleeping hard. He quickly opened the book at the right page, his fingers raced along the black lines of text, his eyes moving from left to right with excitation. "Eureka !" he yelled. The old mentor jumped backward startled by the shout of his young prodigy and he fell off his chair."What is it again ?" asked the old imp. " I just proved the theory of dream magic wrong ! " said Karlok proudly handing his papers on the desk. The professor slowly got on his feet and took hold of the papers. After interminable minutes he turned towards his young apprentice. "You must have made a mistake in your formula," said the old man. "I told you many times, this theory was accepted for over a thousand years. It is highly unlikely a young man like you would prove it wrong when dozens have spent a life time studying it." The eyes of Karlok went wide " You can't disprove my equations because you don't like the results," said Karlok angrily. " Calm down, all I'm saying is you just have an equation, you need concrete results before disproving something."
The last few months had been less interesting with his old mentor. The only thing Karlok wanted was to try and prove his theory was correct or at least that the current one was false and try to bring others to follow his path. But his mentor would have none of it. He was hell bent on him finishing his education properly. He was giving more and more books to read to his young student. The young imp was reading faster and faster while thinking about an experiment he could try. He put down the book and his eyes looked out the window of his study. The problem with magic is only the fairies are able to do it, he thought. What if the fabled elves were able to do it? Or even a machine or an automaton was able to make use of the dream magic ? Are there animals outside of the dream world that could potentially use the dream magic ? Karlok turned toward the desk near the fireplace. " Professor, are there animals in the real world who are intelligent ?" The professor slowly awoke from his slumber trying to understand the question of his student. "This is a strange question. Nothing is as intelligent as the fairies are, except the elves, but no one as heard of them since our ascension to the dream world," said the professor with a sleepy voice. " But I've read somewhere that we discovered animals some years ago and some of them were not as stupid as it seemed," said Karlok. " Hum, maybe you could make an expedition to the real world and see for yourself. This would make you realize how gifted we are with dream magic," said the old professor. "In fact, we can go right now see if the sorcerers can spare some time to help us reach this destination." The professor rose on his feet and left the room. Karlok was astonished by his professor, he had never seen him so eager to show him something. This probably has something to do with the theory of dream magic, he thought.
They arrived at the sorcerers headquarters all loaded up with rations and survival kits for the journey. The building was tall and made completely of multicolored dream stones. The rocks were sustained by a magic string that kept the rocks in place. His professor reached for the door, knocked and said : " Bring me to the transportation chamber." A small buzz was heard, and the two companions vanished, only to reappear in a chamber with no doors with candles as the only light source. An imp was standing near a circle drawn onto the floor and making a few touches with a dream stone in his hand. He heard the two travelers and looked at them. " You are just in time, master Reolic. I'm done with the circle, just stand in there and I'll cast the spell, " said the woman eagerly. The two stepped into the circle cautiously. " How do we come back ? " asked the professor. The small imp smiled. "The spell is only temporary, you will be brought back automatically in two hours," she said. Without waiting any further, she placed her small hands on her forehead, near her brow and started concentrating. The room started to loose color and slowly disappeared before their eyes. Trees slowly appeared around them, they were slowly gaining color, until they were fully materialized beside them. "Ah we are here. Isn't this beautiful," said the professor. "Indeed," said Karlok looking around astonished. The professor started walking in a direction, not certain if it was the right way. After looking at the weird blue sky, he motioned to his student to follow him. After a little while flying, they came across a small mountain side with a cavern on the side. "Let's stay here and observe," said the professor. For a time, nothing was moving and Karlok thought his professor had the wrong location, but after some time, a creature came out of the cavern. The animal was not much bigger than them and walking on two legs with a stone spear in his hands. " We call these the cavern dwellers," murmured the professor. "We should bring him back to study it more in depth," said Karlok. His mentor looked at him funny. " I ... What are your plans ? " Karlok looked the professor right in his eyes with assurance. " I only think we could learn a lot about them and be the first to really study their behavior," said Karlok trying to hide his excitement. "I hate when you do that," said the professor. "You give me a very logical answer, but I know it's not really what you have in the back of your mind," he continued. "We have less than one hour left, there's no time to study it here," replied Karlok. The professor looked at the strange animal, his eyes shinning at the though of being the first one to uncover the secrets of these animals. "Fine, let's hope he can survive the trip back" he finally said.
Looking through the glass of his mansion, Karlok was analyzing the little creature him and his mentor brought back from their trip. The animal was rather easy to lure and capture. It had been another mater to keep it alive. Only when Karlok suggested it needed to drink water and eat food daily, like the tales about the elves of old, that his guinea pig felt better and regained some strength. Over the weeks to follow, he saw the intelligence in the eyes of the animal, in fact, it was more than an animal. Karlok understood better than his old mentor what the implications were. They had found another intelligent living being. Although primitive, he had a language and he found out how the handle of the door was working. The professor thought it was only a coincidence, but the young prodigy knew better. Quickly he started recording the sounds the beast was doing. He found a rich pattern of letters and intonations characteristic of the advanced language they themselves used. It took him many sleepless nights to figure out the words and intonations necessary to be understood by the creature, but low and behold, he succeeded. Despite his mentor disapproval, he was regularly entering the room where they kept the creature and talked with it. He learned a lot about it. He called himself Raemir and he was the son of a shaman in his tribe. He already had a good understanding about the gods magic, a form of magic banned from being used in the faeries societies. So when Karlok showed him the dream magic, the creature understood it was not to be feared. As Karlok was learning the language of the halfling, he was teaching him the use of dream magic. The imp sighted, today was the last try he would do with his subject. He already failed many times, the halfling calling the magic of his god to try and impress his fairy mentor. Karlok pushed the door, smiled at Raemir. "Let's try this one more time, if you don't succeed I'll bring you back home. I brought a gift to you," said Karlok while handing out a necklace made of dream stone. The halfling looked at him with eyes filled with despair, he took the necklace with a bow and put it on. " Thank you. I meditated all nigh to try and do this, I hope I won't disappoint you," said Raemir. The imp sat on the floor with his legs crossed and invited the other to join him. The halfling sit and closed his eyes. He took a deep breath. Sweat started coming trickling down his forehead. But low and behold, he slowly started levitating. At first it was only a few centimeter from the ground, but soon his head reached the ceiling. "You did it !" yelled Karlok. Raemir broke his concentration and fell to the ground.
The triumph Karlok had imagined was not to happen. He gathered the council of magic to show them how Raemir could learn the dream magic and the energy was not coming from the fairies themselves. Unfortunately he was expelled from the meeting with his monkey puppet. Some believed him, but the vast majority of old sorcerers where in total opposition. He sent the halfling back to his world, he stayed with them for a couple of months before coming back. He saw what he had missed when he did the demonstration. The dream magic was not coming from the fairies, but it was directly linked to the dream stone. The fairies have a special links to the dream world and they can access the dream stone energies from everywhere, but for a non fairy to use the dream magic, they need a dream stone near them. He never told of his discoveries to anyone. Instead he pushed his research alone in his mansion. Carefully balancing the use of dream magic energy. He became obsess with the balance of energies and he applied it everywhere in his life. He pushed his research so much that most of his accomplishment wouldn't be understood for another five hundred years.
Only after his ascension, people made an important discovery that proved him right. The Imps started to document all they could on Karlok to have all they could on this pioneer of magic. It was discovered he was not only maintaining the balance in energies, but in all sphere of his life. He would even go as far as balance the beauty and ugliness he saw every day. A small cult started worshiping him.
