The ring-shaped landmass of Aleya, located west of the Sword Coast in the Trackless Sea, did not always have its current shape. About 1,000 years ago, a massive explosion ripped the continent asunder and pushed Aleya apart. Empires were torn or disappeared completely in the masses of water that flowed into the freed space forming the Shatter Sea. Due to this event, henceforth called "The Rupture", latent magic flowed from the interior of Toril to the surface and permanently changed the flora and fauna. In the years that followed, new life forms developed: Animate plant creatures and wandering rock giants can now be found here, as well as flying ray-like mammals that have been altered by the mysterious energy through magical underwater eruptions and adapted to the new habitat.   Since I have described my world so far only in German here (or in my head), there is only a small part in English, but I try to translate this little by little.    

Der gesprengte Kontinent

  Die ringförmige Landmasse Aleya, die sich westlich der Schwertküste in der Spurlosen See befindet, hatte nicht immer ihre heutige Form. Vor rund 1.000 Jahren erschütterte eine gewaltige Explosion den Kontinent, die Aleya sprengte und auseinander drückte. Reiche wurden dabei zerrissen oder verschwanden komplett in den Wassermassen, die in den frei gewordenen Raum strömten und das Splittermeer bildeten. Durch dieses Ereignis, das fortan „Der Bruch“ genannt wird strömte latente Magie aus dem Inneren Torils an die Oberfläche und veränderte die Flora und Fauna nachhaltig. In den darauffolgenden Jahren entwickelten sich neue Lebensformen: Beseelte Pflanzenwesen und wandernde Felsriesen kann man hier nun ebenso antreffen wie fliegende rochenartige Säugetiere, die durch magische Unterwassereruptionen von der mysteriösen Energie verändert wurden und sich an den neuen Lebensraum angepasst haben.
