Calryn

"You can run, we shall find you, no matter what corner of the world you find yourself in. You can't escape what you are now, like it or not you are one of us!" [message spell received whilst fleeing]   Calryn, a name given not on birth but on creation. Understanding now the truth of how he came to be, this Gnome works to slowly dismantle the work of his designers.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Designed for purpose

Calryn was the fourth of the replicas to be produced successfully. Having already produced two clones that could deal with the more confrontational matters the Mutarium dealt with on a day-to-day basis they now sought another to provide a more utility and advisory focus. They did this by producing a replica with a lesser sense of individuality and heightened awareness of the deeper meaning of the world around him. This manifested as a greater sense of insight and prediction than his peers and made him immediately the prime candidate to take up the school of divination as his specialisation.   Unlike the three replicas before him there was no debate over which he would be better suited for, they unanimously voted that he should take up that school. This was much to the chagrin of Calryn who found it the least interesting of the magics, and wanted to prove himself skilled in Abjuration so that he might defy the Mutarium's expectations and see himself in a more confrontational role like some of his peers.   Calryn's specialisation would often see him staying within the Mutarium, making use of intelligence acquired by other replicas and piecing them together into the grander plans that the Mutarium's many enemies were plotting. When he did occasionally get tasks that took him outside he was overjoyed but these were far to few for his liking, and often he was not alone which he found annoying.   Like all of the replicas, Calryns mind was conditioned with powerful magic that made him believe that he was the original man behind all of them. A trick employed by the Mutarium to ensure that there was always a healthy amount of distrust between the clones and that they would not attempt to band together and overthrow those who commanded them.

Kallarstar and the Tides of Fate

Mostly working within the confines of the Mutarium and waiting for intelligence to reach him, Calryn often found himself with nothing to do and often explored the Mutarium in private interested their other projects. On one such occasion, deep within the bowels of the dungeons he received a vision of a room in the complex. The vision was from one Kallarstar, the founder of the Mutarium. He told him where to find the room and how to enter - a series of elementary spells cast at the door in a certain order.   He came across the locked door behind it a glowing dim green light. Within he found the not the man, but the soul of Kallarstar who spoke to him. He explained how he had became dissatisfied with the hands he left the Mutarium in when he departed and the progress they had made since then toward their most important project: returning Kallarstar to life with the body of an undying celestial. He would reward Calryn for helping him with this endeavor, Calryn agreed. He also told Calryn of a location of a rift of magical energy within the dungeon which would need to confront first.
"There exists within this dungeon many things that we have attempted to harness but failed to, when that happens we keep them down here so no one else may try. Go down the hall and enter the large antechamber - within you shall find a source of ancient magic, possibly predating the Gods themselves. Go to it and see what you may learn, but be careful. It is a raw, unrefined magic, many have delved too deep and have not returned. Ensure you do not find yourself among them!" - Kallarstar.
So Calryn went and found the source of magic Kallarstar spoke of, it appeared as a rift of bright, purple light. As Calryn drew near he saw his being phase in and out and other forms of him doing the same around him. What happened next he could not comprehend; the rift was the tides of fate, an impossible reality where all states of time and space exists simultaneously. What Calryn saw was everything: every possible reality; every thing that happened in the past; could have happened; every thing that could happen in the future. This broke Calryn as his mind cannot experience all its pasts and futures, by all means he should have died then then and there.   But Calryn did not die, and after much time started to recover, however the burden of reading the tides of fate still drained him greatly and every time he looked back at what he learned he would black out yet again, unable to hold the unfathomable thoughts in his mind. There was also another complication, the exposure to the tides of fate also broke the Mutarium's conditioning on his mind. Furious and unhinged, Calryn attempted to kill the Mutarium's leadership however his magic could not match theirs and he was captured and imprisoned within the dungeon.

Escape and Micromort

The Mutarium was alarmed that one of their mage specialists had fallen out of their control and quickly began work to reassert the conditioning on his mind. Meanwhile all the tasks that Calryn was due to complete were reassigned to the other mages. In the meantime Calryn began the arduous task of honing his mind and becoming better and better at recalling and holding memories of the tides of fate in his mind

Social

Religious Views

Respects the Gods place in the pantheon but does not follow any in particular, believes a strong character and moral compass are more important than what deity one claims to worship.   While the Gods may have philosophies that are appealing to mortals, they do not always represent what we could achieve. The celestial and material world are different places and as such, world views and values are not easily transferred between them. This means that despite what a cleric might tell you, the Gods do not always know what is best for you.   In any case regardless of anyone's spiritual beliefs, action and conviction are much more powerful than faith and one should always be prepared to do the hardest things themselves rather than have a God step in to do it for them.
"We are drowned by greed and suffering in this world, it would be foolish to think out of all the potential causes yours is the most noble. Instead of praying for those higher than you to take action, why not do so yourself... besides why should we expect the Gods to do all the work?"

Hobbies & Pets

Has an owl familiar named Rorschach who assists him in his research for various magics. With him also is a Gazer who he has taken on as a second familiar who he has taken to calling Micromort. When he cannot make decisions he often seeks council of his familiars, in addition if he finds himself outnumbered in a decision he will often defer to their judgement (he will overrule when necessary however).   Enjoys a good book. Prefers biographies and historical accounts but is not above a good work of fiction.

Cunning and intelligent, this man with his mind unshackled will finally bring about the ruin of the ones who wronged him in the past.
