Alami

What is the name of the world in which the story takes place? That question is up for debate, but according to the Alaatu, the world is called Alami. This is the general consensus, only because 80 years ago, the Alaatu occupied the whole island and led a dictatorship over all of the various peoples who lived there. They committed a genocide against the Wotchercho, a group of hunter-gatherer clans who lived in the rain forests in the center of the island. They also led mass executions against anyone who practiced magic in any of the people groups they controlled, including the It'kalans, Milirans, and Deretki. A group of Milirans got together and over threw the Alaatu in all of their colonies on the west side of the island, ending the hundred year long occupation by the Alaatu. In exchange for their freedom, the Milirans forced the It'kalans and Deretki to offer up one person to work at the Alaatu stronghold as aids to the Miliran ambassadors, since no sane Miliran would do it: the Alaatu still believed magic was stealing power from the Gods, and would execute anyone found to harbor such power.   Kav is a Deretki, living in Alaatu for this exact purpose. She is only weeks away from completing her time as an aid to the Ambassador, and she longs to go home to Deretki to swim in the shallow waters, collecting shellfish, and spend peaceful evenings with her mothers and grandmother.   Enutah is a Princess of Miliro, fated to become Queen one day since the crowned Prince, her Uncle, has no children. However, because of an incident in her past involving magic, her mother does not trust her ability to sit on the throne. Enutah thirsts to prove herself and tries to do all she can as the people of the stronghold prepare for the summer solstice.   However, everything goes very wrong when three of Enutah's family members, her father, Uncle, and Grandfather, who was the King, are found dead in the rain forests while hunting for the sacrifices for the summer solstice. There deaths were no accident, as is apparent from their magically inflicted wounds. Not only that, but it is announced that her Uncle had secret, heir, lost to him 20 years ago. Enutah, with Kav's help as translator, must journey to the west side to try to locate the secret heir as an attempt to prove to her mother that she is worthy. However, all that they see along the way will tests Enutah's faithfulness to her mother and her traditions, and bring Kav farther and farther away from her beloved homeland.
