Akkhen

When mankind was decimated during the Purge, Akkhen was the only possible refuge: a lush world five times the size of Terra. 2-3 million of the remaining population were transported to Akkhen by the gigantic ship, the Nemesis. The Nemesis subsequently marooned them on Akkhen with very little in the way of resources or technology and disappeared.   Akkhen was viewed as a fresh start for the refugees, and so the society was structured very carefully to avoid past mistakes. Fossil fuels are out of the question; if you can't make something that uses an eco-friendly energy source, you do without that particular thing. Technology was viewed as a pure tool; AI and robots are anathema to all humans. Not because of any bad event in the past, but because the idea of becoming reliant on technology is abhorrent. Best to give a job to a human who could use the money and who will also be - hopefully - loyal and unhackable. If the scientific industry have money to burn - which almost never happens - it puts it toward medical advancements.   As the civilization developed, space travel was eventually made possible again. Some people fled to a new planet, Trandellia, and others tried returning to Terra. The expedition to Terra never returned, and so that planet was considered lost.   Due to their history prior to the Insurrection some 400 years after settling, Akkhenians view culinary skills as highly important. They also have compulsory military service, although there has been no war since that Insurrection. This service lasts ten years. The thinking behind this is that, since their ancestors on Akkhen fought for ten years to free them from a brutal regime, they can dedicate the same amount of time to serving the planet.
