Military: War

A civil war in Xian between oligarches and royalty spreads to the nations of Yamato and Han. After the war, Xian was reformed as a constitional monarchy.

The powerful oligarchic families that secretly controlled much of the Xian Empire's economy and military grew impatient with the aging Emperor's reluctance to expand influence into neighboring countries. They viewed Yamato and Han as weaker nations that could be dominated or incorporated into a new Xian sphere of influence.   In 2029, hardliners within the oligarchies staged a coup in the Xian capital, overthrowing the Emperor and declaring one of the oligarchs as Prime Minister. However, royalist forces and dissenting generals remained loyal to the imperial House of Xian. A brutal civil war erupted across central and eastern Xian.   The new Xian regime reached out to Yamato and Han, demanding they submit to Xian oversight on trade and security issues. Both nations refused, seeing Xian as unstable and the oligarchs as untrustworthy new leaders. In 2031, as the Xian civil war spread beyond its borders, Yamato and Han formed a military alliance to contain the conflict.   Over the next five years, the two republics engaged Xian forces and separatist territories that had emerged. The war was long and costly for all sides. Modern weapons like drones, mechs and nanotech caused unprecedented damage. Public support wavered but the alliance held.   In 2036, a new generation of Xian generals staged a coup against the oligarchs. They offered to restore the Emperor's son to the throne and establish a constitutional monarchy. Yamato and Han agreed to a peace, gaining concessions about their sovereignty. The war ended in September with new borders and a reformed but wary Xian empire emerging from the ashes.
