The Grand Kingdom of Anzia

The name Anzia is old, dating back to the time of ancients, yet its current form is startlingly new. A powerful feudal monarchy with mighty knights and clerics supporting an army of well-trained men-at-arms and archers. It is rich and steeped in culture and boasts of the most populous nation in all of Iada (but not the largest). Anzia has fostered envy and resentment among its neighbor leading to several long and bloody wars, with the current being the War of the Broken Lance. The power of Anzia is best displayed in the capital of Sonne, the city of marble. The cities of Arcoma, Malles, and Le Portan dominate the internal economy of Anzia. Religion is a cornerstone of Anzia. While not as closely tied as the Firaen Empire, the church carries monumental power in Anzian politics.

Structure

King: The king's revenue is great enough that he has been able raise forces wholly unique in their composition. Professional state troops tied to their king. The practice has not expanded further as the barons, wary of such a force, have made sure to prevent any proposed increases in its size. The king is often required to prove himself before he is able to ascend to the throne. Anzian kings often marry a priestess, this is encouraged by the church and means that Anzian forces oft assist the church. This does not always occur, but it is a trend.   Dukes: Take painstaking effort to check the power of the king Very powerful, rule their domains like little kingdoms   Counts: Essentially a lord’s lord   Lords: Whenever war comes to pass, lords call up their forces to assist them in battle. Ranging from a couple dozen knights with a dozen soldiers each, to hundreds of knights with dozens of soldiers each.   Knights: Anzian knights are the elite that all others hold themselves to. Superior at skill of arms, their neighbors only beat them in specific categories. Sarians are better on the charge. Men of Vazonne are more pragmatic. Damakans are faster. Knights often equip fellows to serve alongside them, ranging from a small detachment of crossbows, to a handful of men-at-arms to assist in the melee. Anzian knights have a more codified version of chivalry than most, and are more devoted to it than most.   Freemen: Minor landholders. Men who own farms which they work. Unlike Damaka, they are not expected to serve as infantry (though many serve in militia) Actually in exchange for tax breaks, some freemen serve as archers for Anzian armies   Serfs: The life of a serf varies on the whims of their master, but usually averages out to busy. The interaction between knight and serf is like that of boss and employee. The rights of serfs are often negotiable with their masters, some are allowed to legally own land, others are not.

Public Agenda

Expand its territory, further punish its rivals for the immensely destructive War of the Broken Lance, and consolidate interior power.

Demography and Population

Demographics: Anzia is almost a human ethno-state. Almost. It has a decent halfling minority, a fair few elves, and some dwarves. and, as repayment for their piety, a massive aasimar population. Human: 80% Aasimar: 7% Halflings: 8% Elves: 2% Dwarves: 2% Other: 1%

Territories

The ancestral lands of Anzia are known by most as Anzia proper, it is the region with least civil strife and conflict.   The Duchy of Sallia is a land of rolling plains and hills and is the breadbasket of the kingdom. Sallia is also known for its massive pastures where sheep graze, the wool produced here is used in much international trade. The duke is often a close relation to the royal family and the region is a (usually) loyal and profitable region of the Grand Kingdom.   The County of Portana is the second largest and second wealthiest region of Anzia. It is mostly loyal due to being long-held territory, but has a distinct cultural difference compared to Anzia proper. Le Portan is the largest city in the county   The Duchy of Andurs covers much of the frontier with Damaka, the duke is known to be particularly difficult in Anzian history.   The Tresau Marche is the border with Estvald and is covered in mountains with many guild towns.   The Montrac Marche is the frontier region that borders the great forest and Saria. It is mostly loyal, but cannot enforce many royal edicts due to its spread out nature and somewhat lacking infrastructure. The Count of Montrac is immensely powerful with a massive army.

Military

Boasting superb armored knights, competent light cavalry, units of men-at-arms, mercenaries, archers, artillery, and heavy infantry. Anzian knights are the centrepiece of any true Anzian force. Anzian armies are often heavier than most, with large concentrations of heavy infantry and heavy cavalry. Anzian forces tend to favor quality of quantity. Being so focused on elite forces leaves Anzia in the precarious position of having a slower army to protect its massive borders from its neighbors. Their ideal battle strategy is to lock down the enemy army with heavy infantry after a short skirmish phase and trap them between the hammer and anvil, cavalry being the hammer slamming the enemy into the anvil. Anzia has two other distinct army types at its command. The forces of the Holy See, and the King's Own. In Summation, Anzian forces are comparatively slow and occasionally but elite, well-trained, brave, and bolstered by mighty clerics. The small numbers are not an issue for a defensive war, with militia of all forms being raised in considerable number. Knights

Religion

They follow the traditional Eastern Church. The Anzians take particular pride in their high numbers of saints and strong influence in the Eastern Church.

Foreign Relations

Generally speaking the Grand Kingdom is respected, but not liked. It has one ally, the Estvaldic Union, who is unable to help in most of its wars. Given the chance, many of Anzia's neighbors welcome an opportunity to knock the proud kingdom down a peg.

Agriculture & Industry

Anzia is largely an agricultural power, its towns producing enough goods to be sufficient, but is nowhere near the industrial power that is Freizon.
