The King's Eagle

One of the most magnificent birds to be found in the Northern Kingdom is the sea eagle known as The King's Eagle. This giant raptor has adapted to build its nests along the 200 foot (60.9 meter) high cliffs of the northern coastline.   It is seen by many as being a protector of the kingdom and is depicted on the royal coat of arms of the King.

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

The sea eagles mate for life and a pair will build multiple nests, set 100 feet up on the cliffs along the coast. They begin courtship in late winter, then lay 1 to 3 greenish white eggs in mid-spring.

Growth Rate & Stages

Incubation Period: 39 to 45 days
Hatchling Survival Rate: Usually only 1 hatchling survives, but two, even three, can make it to maturity.
Hatchling Coloration: Grey-white, changes to brown as they mature. Learn to Fly: Around 10 weeks of age
Age of Maturity: About 5 years
Length at Maturity: 34 to 41 inches (86.5 to 105 cm) long

Ecology and Habitats

Nest by USFWS
The sea eagle has adapted itself to living in the harsh terrain that is the sheer basalt cliff faces along the northern coast. The eagles are able to build large nests that seem to defy gravity by wedging branches into fissures in the stones, then building nests of branches that weigh hundreds of pounds and can be up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) in diameter on the ledges that themselves are only up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) in diameter.   A pair of sea eagles will build several nests in an area, then each spring choose which one to perform maintenance on for use that year. A typical nest is built of hundreds of branches and can measure 6 to 8 feet (1.8 to 2.4 meters) wide.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The main staple of the sea eagle's diet is fish, primarily the salmon that spawns in the river and streams of the Great Rift, or trout in the lakes and rivers of the inland region. They will also feed on small animals such as smaller birds, crabs, rabbits, and even the carcasses of deer and other similarly sized animals.   The sea eagle is known to swoop down from heights of 100 feet (30 meters), catching prey in their sharp talons. They will even attack other birds to steal their catch.   The massive birds are also skilled at hunting for fish while standing on rocks, ice, or in the water, and grabbing the fish that swim by.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Both eyes of the sea eagle focus forward, providing depth perception that allows it to dive from heights of 100 feet (30 meters) to attack prey.
