Swiftlet Nests

Swiftlet nests are made by the male swiftlets over the course of about a little more than a month, with the nest having a cup-like shape built against the stone where it is sheltered from predators.   The nest is an opaque yellow-white color and turns translucent when boiled or darker yellow-tan when baked.   One of the rarest of delicacies enjoyed in the southern kingdom is a dish known as Nested Hatchlings. This is a dish made up of a cooked bird nest that has been carefully harvested by climbers either from dwarven mine shafts or recesses in the basalt cliffs on the eastern edge of the Kingdom of the North.   The dish became so popular with the nobility of the southern kingdom that unscrupulous gatherers were collecting the nests while the swiftlets were still raising their young, leading to a sharp enough decline in the swiftlet population in those areas that both dwarves and the kingdom of the north placed a ban on the harvesting of swiftlet nests. This has led to a strong black market trade and fine dining establishments that have a 'off the menu' list of foods that include Nested Hatchlings as one of the dishes that only those who are known by the chef can order.   The nest is also believed to have medicinal properties, and is boiled for use in specialty elixirs, which are often sweetened with honey or other sweeteners, with a measure of opium added to give the elixir a combined addictive quality and make the consumer feel that the elixir has cured their ailments.   Some alchemists claim that glue made from swiftlet nests is the best glue, but artisans insist it is no better than average glues that do not cost as much.

Nested Hatchlings

Highly prized by the nobility and wealthy of the southern kingdom, the dish is rumored to have first been served as a joke, or prank, at a feast the dwarves of the dwarven city of Hearthstone played on an emissary from the Temple of Justice in the southern crown city.   The dish is a well baked nest that is used as an edible bowl that is lined with black eggs, two or more cooked-in-shell unhatched chicks, and two or more small roast chicks.
