Butcher's Row

A small street of hard-packed dirt that connects Market Street with Merchant Street, Butcher's Row is little better than an alleyway. The street is just wide enough for two wagons to pass one another, with areas near a cluster of butcher's shops and the stables for wagons to pull off of the street for loading and unloading.   The __________ Tavern sits at the southernmost end of Butcher's Row, facing out onto Market Street. The back entry of the tavern opens out into the stables, with a small blacksmithing shop facing toward the back porch of the tavern. There is an alleyway to the left as you leave the tavern, the end of the horse corral seen to the left between the stables and the buildings on the northern side of the alleyway.   Butcher's Row is through an open gateway on the right side of the courtyard, with a walkway going down between the tavern and the neighboring boarding / work house. Butcher's Row makes an bit of a twist that takes it out around the boarding house.   the final few buildings along the northern end of the street, nearest to Merchant Street, are a collection of better quality butcher shops favored by the residents of both the merchant and noble districts.

Purpose / Function

The street originated as a route along which cattle were driven to the stock yards, then down to the slaughterhouses. Since the city grew to include the area, the street is one of the few along which livestock is still driven at certain times of the year.

Alterations

With the city growth , the butchers have built shops along the northern end of the street.

Architecture

The street is lined on one side by single or two story slaughterhouse buildings, most of the other side of the street is a stable and livestock pens.

Gabriel's Route

1) Gabriel enters the area from the west. He is walking along the back alley that runs behind the businesses.
2) Gabriel discovers the body of the victim laying near the back of the blacksmith shop, near the corral. He stops there to check on the body just before the cook steps onto back porch of tavern.
3) After telling the cook to send for more guards, Gabriel moves through (or around) the smithy shop to check the stables - where he notes a pair of horses that are finer than the usual wagon haulers the stable keeps in it.
4) Gabriel then moves to the street and signals another guard, who is at the end of the next block, then Gabriel heads along in front of the tavern and turns into a pass-thru that will take him to location 5, as he enters the pass-thru he finds a smear of blood on wall.
5) Exiting the pass-thru, Gabriel finds a group of Justicars and people from the tavern have gathered at the crime scene.
