Vulkasvidde

Vulkasvidde, formerly The Dragon Kingdoms of Vulkas, is a territory controlled by the Estmari Empire. Vulkasvidde is inhabitied primarily by draconic species, dragons, dragonborn, and kobolds. In the past, Vulkas was ruled by dragon-kings, few in number but great in power, who ruled over independent kingdoms. The territory of Vulkas is rich in mineral and natural wealth, if somewhat inhospitable due to the sub-arctic climate. This wealth drew the attention of the newly formed Estmari Empire, and eager for these resources, and bolstered by their new thaumic technology, the Estmari began to invade Vulkas. The long, audrous war resulted in the slaying of many dragons, and with the dragon-kings dead or driven off, the Estmari Empire now claims the territorry of Vulkas, although the majority of it is still untamed. Vulkas, now named Vulkasvidde has become a snowy frontier, budding industry colliding with the wild reality of the land, while the deposed dragon-kings harass the new order, and plot to send it crashing down.

Demography and Population

The population is mostly made up of dragonborn (35%), kobolds (45%), and various other races (20%). Many humans from Estmare have arrived at the eastern coast of Vulkasvidde, eager to establish industry and commerce in the new lands. Further inland, the human population declines, usually the only humans are either those running various resource extraction operations, or dissident humans hiding from the Estmari eye. Goblinoid races are becoming more common among mining and logging settlements, often used as cheap labor alongside kobolds. Towards the deep interior, the only settlements are small ports on the Dragon Sea, and these towns must contend both with the harsh conditions and the threat of enraged dragons.

Territories

Vulkasvidde is the nothernmost country in Merivos, and its northern coast runs along the Frigeris Ocean. It's eastern coast is along the Estmari Interior Sea, and its sourthern coast opens into the Dragon Sea. It borders Drigestadt and Nyy'sil to the west, and Estmari Amiterre to the south. The territory of Vulkas have been the ancestral lands of the draconic races, although they have been conquered and held by the Estmari for over 500 years. The Estmari are in the process of colonizing the lands along the Interior Estmari Sea and the Dragon Sea. Towns are sprouting up along the eastern coast, and the city of Varmeskjerm has been made the administrative capital and has seen a great deal of development. The rest of Vulkas is difficult to colonize and even more difficult to control, and as such development has only occured where resources were plentiful and defense possible.

Religion

The Vulkans worship the Aspects of Creation. Commonly worshipped Aspects among natives include Certus-Aeon, Orito-Aether, Ferox-Anima and Venari-Anima, Irae-Mori, and Acies-Oria and Iruis-Oria.

Foreign Relations

Vulkasvidde is subject to the foreign policy of the Estmari Empire. Before conquest, the dragon-kings of Vulkas had a cordial relationship with Amiterre, and a less than friendly relationship with the Estmari Empire.

Agriculture & Industry

The towns alongside the coasts are often the core of industry and trade within Vulkasvidde. The former kingdom of Varmeskjerm in particular is known for its industrial base and development. The majority of the population live and work in these cities, and many of those who do toil in the factories. Mineral extraction and refinement is the largest industry in Vulkasvidde, Mines in the eastern interior transport metals, gems, thaumic material, and other valuables to industrial towns alongside the coast for refinement. While some local industry utilizes the refined goods, most of them are shipped to Estmare and Domhainn across the Estmari Interior Sea, or to the Estmari Amiterre city of Novelle Faylienne via the Dragon Sea and Faylienne Canal. Thaumatracks are rare in Vulkasvidde, with only a couple lines between major cities and clusters of mines. These thaumatracks are almost universally reserved for commercial or government use only.   Outside of the coastal industrial economy, and the numerous mining and logging operations further inland, agriculture in Vulkasvidde is the final tenent of their economy. Crop yields in Vulkasvidde are much lower than other locations in the Estmari Empire, due to the hostile climate. Most crops that are grown are those that are hardy and can handle regular freezing temperatures. To accomodate the growing industrial base and shrinking agricultural sector, Vulkasvidde is reliant on food imports from other territories.

Education

Primary and secondary education exist, but have failed to spread outside the costal towns, and the few larger towns in the interior. Among farmers, it is a gamble as to whether one can read or write. Kobolds especially are plagued with illiteracy, for both having endured treatment as second-class citizens, and for a lifestyle that prioritized oral tradition over written language. Dragonborn generally expect greater educational opportunities, and are usually literate. Most non-native races are likely educated elsewhere.   The Gulskalla Society based in Varmeskjerm offers education in many arcane disciplines, and the Mesafross Towers along the Frigeris Coast are among the finest centers of research for evocation magics. Deep within the interior of the country ancient monastic traditions survive, offering their teachings to those who can find them, and adhere to their tenents.
