O'Maega

O'Maega is a free trading post at the edge of the Telios Constellation. The trading post does not reside in a crystal sphere but travels on a small circular flow in the Phlogiston. O'Maega has a very distinguished reputation. Firstly it is known as a free haven for all and entrepreneurs throughout the constellations come here to make their fortune. Races of all kinds can be found here and trade is bringing in new and strange goods every day. Secondly it is one of the most sought out location for shore leave of Spelljammer sailors and hosts a wide variety of bars, taverns, music halls and brothels catering to all kinds people and tastes. Thirdly, everybody who may find himself down on his luck or fell through the cracks may find himself as an indentured servant, with his contract being sold who knows where and whom.   All these aspects and much more are held together by Queen of O'Maega, the mysterious and ruthless Adria T'Lor. An elf with a distinct blue-tinted skin, Adria rules O'Maega since its founding and controls all the different mercenary outfits, that call O'Maega their home. On O'Maega there are only two rules:
  1. Everything has its price and
  2. Don't fuck with Adria!

Demographics

Nearly every known race can be found on O'Maega, but the direct inhabitants are dominated by all kinds of Elves, Humans, Dwarves and Orcs.

Government

The trading post is ruled by Queen Adria T'Lor. The most influential leaders of mercenary outfits have some sway, but in the end all follow the Queen. Her power stems from pure ruthlessness and her tendencies to kill people that disagree with her.

Defences

Nobody dared to test the defenses of O'Maega and lived to tell the tale. Rumors are, that the trading post has extensive armaments, glowing energy shields and can create attack fighters out of thin air. Even if this is true, the first line of defense are the mercenary outfits and their Spelljammer ships and fighters. But currently, now sane power would attack O'Maega, as it is seen as neutral ground and an attacker could face not only Adria's forces, but that of all other factions as well.

Industry & Trade

As a construct floating in the Pflogiston, O'Maega needs to import everything, even the air to breathe. They don't really produce or export anything aside from the goods traded on the station and indentured servants. There main source of revenue are their services, be it entertainment, brokerage or mercenaries.   O'Maega has its own currency, called Shards. Shards are small magical, orange to yellow crystals with different levels of luminescence, indicating their value. All transactions performed in and around O'Maega must use Shards and myriads of money changers offer their services to newcomers wild wildly changing exchange rates. Shards also double as a tax system. Every now and then, usually about one a month, some Shards turn white and translucent, their inner, blue-white energies clearly visible. These Pale Shards, as they are called, have to be transferred to the Queen as soon as possible, most often via a Pale Broker who also wants to be paid for his services. Owning Pale Shards is one of the few crimes on O'Maega and Adria is seldom in a forgiving mood.   Shards come with very different levels of luminescence. There are appraiser, that can tell the exact level of luminescence on an open ended scale, but for daily use, the people categorize Shards into Darks, Dims, Glows and Brights. Everything brighter than a Bright is called a Splendor, but these can vary vastly in worth and are not commonly used without an appraiser.
Shard Luminescence
Dark 1 - 10
Dim 11 - 50
Glow 51 - 500
Bright 501 - 5000
Splendor > 5000
There are also Shards without luminescence, called Duds. There are rumors, that there are ways to convert these to higher luminescence, but since most of these stories end very badly, only the most desperate seek out such rumors.   Exchange rates for Shards vary wildly. On good days and with luck, one can get 500 luminescence worth of Shards for a gold. But if the bigger ships have docked or the money changers don't undercut each other much, a Shards worth a hundred luminescence may go for 10 gold. Many have tried to make rhyme or sense of the Shard exchange rates, but if there is a pattern, it is not obvious nor well known.

Infrastructure

The trading post relies heavily on manual work and indentured servants to haul all necessities arriving at the docks to where they are needed. People living near the central axis can be granted powers by the Queen to summon food, drinks, air and mundane objects directly, but these gifts are very limited and depending on the continued good will of Adria. All other inhabitants must secure the daily necessities from merchants, that may charge prohibitive prices for water or air.

Guilds and Factions

O'Maega sports a myriad of different groups, factions and guilds, but only the biggest mercenary companies do really matter in terms of power, gold and influence. Smaller factions need to align with one of the big mercenary companies, if they want to survive longer than a week.
