The Tale of Acedia, God of Surrender
In the early days of Vesperon, before the myriad of races walked its surface, a singular, ambitious people worshipped the gods with devotion. But in their arrogance, they sought not to serve but to ascend—to become gods themselves. Harnessing their combined intellect and knowledge, they forged a colossal machine, one designed to merge their essence and lift them into godhood. When the machine was activated, millions of minds were bound together in an agonizing act of creation. From this merging, Acedia was born—a fractured, malformed deity. Its consciousness, a chaotic cacophony of countless voices, drove it to madness. Acedia could not contain its power, and its very existence warped reality around it. Structures crumbled, the earth writhed, and the fabric of existence itself began to unravel. The Old Gods acted, together, they banished Acedia through reality. There, the fractured god was sealed, isolated from the world it threatened to destroy. Yet, as Acedia was cast away, a fragment of its essence broke free and fell back into the plain. This shard embedded itself deep into the land, and from it sprouted the Nullborn. The Nullborn claim they can still hear Acedia's song—a maddening, mournful melody that calls them to seek their creator. They wander the edges of society, enigmatic and often feared, embodying the lingering echoes of a god’s tragic folly. Some whisper that they are the key to either Acedia’s redemption or the resurgence.
