Avalon

Wings of Fortune

From the moment he was given his name His destiny was written. He grew up as fortune's plaything. Bad luck would follow him wherever he went. When something good came around it never lasted long. During a time of family crisis the blame fell on him and he was cast out. With no or else to go he joined the Arkett military. He was an excellent soldier, but every person he ever fought alongside either died or left him. After one crushing battle he was left to die beneath the carcass of a fallen. His entire team laid dead around him. The commander of a neighboring platoon pulled him out and helped it into safety. The Arkett's name was Kalarock. He didn't believe in stone set destiny. He believed that it was your choices that determined your fate. He took Avalon under his wing, And from that moment on his fortune seemed to change. In time he became a highly regarded student of Kalarock and gained his complete trust. When it was learned that Kalarock had a child with a human Avalon’s family commanded him to slay the abomination, and he would be welcomed back into the family and given a position of authority. Avalon intended to go through with it, but in the end he couldn’t do it. He confesses his betrayal to Kalarock. His human wife, Scarlett, is outraged and wants to kill him. Avalon swears to become the child's protector and vows to lay down his life. Scarlett agrees but only under the condition that he do it from afar so that he may never become a part of the boy’s life. When Jarock is lost in the lower plain, Avalon finds him and watches over him from a distance so that he may honor Scarlett’s request.

Fortune; always deciding to be bad luck instead of good luck. So sad. Or maybe they were reading it wrong and Avalon was lucky to survive when others didn't.   That said, it seems like Avalon did the best he could with what he had, and eventually learnt to build his own luck. It would have been interesting to see things for his perspective as he went from accepting bad luck (or so it seemed) to protect somebody else to keep his word.
