Old Long-Step

Old Long-Step is something that is believed to wander the plains of the Whistling Expanse. It's stories vary from person to person

Spread

The Myth of Old Long-Step has spread across the entirety of the Whistling expanse. Every village and every home has a story or a rumored encounter with it.

Variations & Mutation

The myth varies a lot depending on the person telling the myth. Some say Old Long-Step is a massive spider with green skin that camouflages with the grass; it reportedly eats anyone who travel to far into its territory. Others believe Old Long-step is some sort of malnourished and sickly giant, its long arms drag in the grass, leaving behind perfectly straight lines. It is constantly hungry, and it finds and eats anything in its path. Some believe Old Long-Step is an invisible creature or spirit that stalks the expanse, spiriting away any travellers that dare venture too far off the road or disturb the natural ecosystem. But all variations have a few things in common. Old Long-Step is large; when it is around, the whistling through the grass ceases, and even the birds are too afraid to make a noise. So when you find things have gone too quiet, it may already be too late; the Long-Step has found you.

Cultural Reception

Old Long-step is mostly used as a warning of the dangers of venturing too far off the road or away from society. To most, even if they believe the stories or not, Long-Step represents the danger the wilderness of the Whistling Expanse poses. There are many who believe that Old Long-Step is a tall tale meant to scare people away from the edges of civilization.
