Personal history

Brock Elman Leonhard was born in the small village of Adinfell on the 15th of Onda. The village of Adinfell was rather small and hidden away in the caverns inside a mountain in the free areas of the Underdark. It was originally founded by a powerful Dwarven geokineticist by the name of Hedraek Leonhard , Brock’s great great great grandfather. He believed the sight to be blessed by Torag and thought it to have a great connection with the earth. Over the years a great many Oreads have been birthed or migrated to the town, causing them to make up the majority population of the town with the rest being primarily Dwarves and Svirfneblin. Brock’s father, Reidic Leonhard, was head of the monastery that serves as the school and focal point of the town. One day, while going about his regular duties, the guards that oversee the front of the cave leading to the village brought him a small group of adventurers that had been greatly wounded. The monks took them in and oversaw their recovery and Reidic, being the head, oversaw many of them personally. It took quite a long time for some of the greater wounds to recover and during this time Reidic got to know the adventures very well. One of these adventures was Catylin Caldwell, who quickly fell in love with her kind and caring caretaker. When the time came for the group to leave Catylin opted to stay and would eventually Marry Reidic. Several of the elders disapproved of this coupling, fearing that a human would interrupt the long line of pure earthen blood as all of the members of the chief’s bloodline had been either Dwarf or Oread. They feared that they connection to the earth would be disrupted by the impure mating and would cause the loss of the geokinetic abilities of the chief’s family. Despite this the two had decided they were in love and eventually gave birth to Brock.   Many of the elders of the village were pleased to see that Brock had been born and Oread, hoping that their prayers to Torag to preserve the bloodline had been answered. During the first twenty years of his life he was mostly kept at home with his mother where, against his father’s wishes, she would tell him of some of the adventures she had been on. By the time he was twenty and ready to start his studies at the monastery he had already been filled with curiosity of what things were outside the walls of their mountain home. While in class he found out that he was not a typical Oread. Where the others where stoic and contemplative he was curious and rash. He enjoyed wandering around the village or playing around in class as opposed to paying attention to his studies. He found that he had more in common with the only human boy in class, a ten year old boy by the name of Alexander. Brock felt a certain kinship with Alexander, due to the fact his mother was human, that lead to them being great friends. Brock would often play and practice fighting with Alexander when they had little else to do.

Not long after Brock had started his studies, his grandfather had made the decision to step down as chief of the village. This didn’t change too much in Brock’s life although it did lead to him feeling a certain pride in being the son of the Chief. He looked up to his father and tried to learn as much as he could about what he had to do to run the village. Brock looked forward to the day he would take over for his father and protect the village himself. Also around this time his father began to teach him about his innate abilities to control the powers of earth. His father spent much time demonstrating his abilities, hoping that Brock would one day discover how to wield this power for himself.

The next couple of years went by rather smoothly. Despite his lack of paying attention he was still doing rather well in school, he would play with Alexander often, and he began to show minor geokinetic abilities. The powers he displayed were rather weak, simply being able to move around small amounts of dirt, but it was enough to show that he had inherited his father’s power despite the elder’s concerns and was beginning to learn how to use it. His friendship with Alexander was growing stronger but unfortunately with the difference in their aging Alexander was quickly outgrowing Brock and was showing great aptitude as a fighter. It became very clear to Brock that Alexander intended to leave the village to go make a name for himself on the surface. Eventually that day did come, when Alexander turned twenty he decided it was finally time to leave. This left Brock alone in the village with no close friends to speak of and an even deeper desire to see the rest of the world. He intensified his training and started acting out a bit more as he started to feel lonely in the village. He didn’t dislike his own people but he found them to be boring and monotonous and therefore didn’t enjoy being around them much. He also began expressing his desires to leave the village to his mother, who being from the surface understood what it was like to travel. She would often tell him of the importance of him staying in the village to help his father protect the people but would occasionally take him to the surface to see what it was like when her stories were not enough to satisfy his wonder of the outside world.

As he continued to improve his abilities and his curiosity grew he began to get in the habit of sneaking out of the village. He wouldn’t usually stray to far, he would just want to wander around and see what the rest of the Underdark was like. His parents and instructors had always talked about how dangerous it was but he hadn’t encountered anything that he thought he should be scared of. That was until one day he ended up going farther away from the village than he had ever gone before. Out in the wild areas of the Underdark he was spotted by a small group of Duregar slavers who attempted to run him down and take him. He quickly started to flee and was able to find a small hole that he could fit inside where they couldn’t quite reach him. From inside the hole he attempted to attack them with his earth blast but he was still to weak and all it did was manage to annoy the slavers. They spent a little under an hour trying to pry him out of the hole before Reidic tracked down his son and quickly killed the group. Being stuck inside the hole and afraid for his life would be most terrifying experience of his life, but would do little to stop him from venturing out again. Within a couple of months he would once again be wandering outside the village, although this time he would be more careful.

His life continued normally into his forties rather uneventfully. This changed in his 42nd year of life, on 17th of Sol his mother passed away. While her death was rather sudden, she had just reached her 70th year of life and it had been long expected that she would pass. While her death hit him pretty hard the village had a philosophy that one should be revered in death as they were in life. It was seen as a joyous occasion if someone whom had lead a happy and fulfilled life died that there death should be met with joy at the accomplishments of the departed and prayer for their safe passage to their rightful home in the afterlife. While he did feel joy at the celebration of his mother’s life he felt saddened from the fact that he would no longer hear her stories or journey to the surface with her any longer. It was at this point he and his father truly began to clash more and more often about Brock's opinion of their lifestyle. While Brock understood what his father did for the village and how safe it was for the people who lived there he couldn’t live with the idea that he was expected to remain in the village all his life and only ever journey as far as the surrounding towns to trade. He would often fight with his father about his desire to journey to the surface and see the wonders that his mother had spoken of. While his father was not dismissive of his desires he tried to get Brock to understand that he had duty to the village and that it was his responsibility to remain as the chief.

During his fourth and fifth decade he would do just enough at the temple to avoid getting in trouble but would spend most of his time training and wandering around the Underdark. By this point he was able to use his abilities as a weapon in itself and felt confident in his ability do defend himself from whatever he came across. His father seemed particularly proud of him on the day that he finally showed the ability to use his blast effectively. That night he and his father celebrated his fledgling steps to becoming a powerful warrior, although his father did end it with a lecture about how much he had left to master. During these years he would keep his thoughts of leaving to himself but would often volunteer anytime there was a chance to interact with outsiders or if it was required for someone to go to the surface. When traders would venture down he would ask them for stories of where they came from or where they had been and he would often buy any books he could from them. He developed a love of reading. He would read anything he could get his hands on, be it a factual tale or fiction, as long as it had something to do with action or adventure.

On his 60th birthday he was allowed to take the final test of the monk to be considered a full member of the temple and no longer be considered a student. He was able to pass relatively easily despite his only having paid a moderate amount of attention during his studies. On the day of his graduation his father presented him with a set of ceremonial prayer beads that had been passed down through the family since the founding of the village. The beads were made of solid stone and had a small symbol of Torag hanging from the center bead. This was a huge moment in Brock’s eyes as it meant that his father no longer saw him as a child but as an equal. From this point on the times when he would have studied were filled with work at the temple, usually his father preparing him for the day he would be expected to run the temple. It was customary for the son of the chief to take charge of the monastery prior to having the title of chief passed to him, to display his ability to lead to his father. He worked at the temple under his father’s direction and was being groomed to be the next head monk when a wanderer came through the village. This man was an elf by the name of Ellisar and claimed to be a follower of Desna who had dedicated his life to wandering around the world to see all the sights it had to offer. During his long life the elf had seen many places in the world and had many tales of adventures that he had been on and the people he had met. During the time he Ellisar spent in the village he would share the philosophies of Desna and tell of her followers who would travel for the sake of nothing but to travel. Ellisar spent three weeks in the village before deciding it was time for him to continue moving but it was long enough for Brock to consider his arrival as a sign. He thought the man must definitely have been a sign from the goddess herself that he should follow his desires and see what adventures he could have out in the open world. At this point he decided that he would set out on his way his way in the world. He told his father that he would not be able to live a fulfilled or happy life stuck underground all of his life. His father was reluctant but after hearing Brock’s thoughts on how he thought Desna was telling him to start his journeys he agreed to allow Brock to leave. He gave his blessing on the condition that he when Brock decided he had traveled enough and was ready to settle down again that he would return to the village to take his place as chief and protector of the village.

Soon after his 70th birthday he would end up leaving the village to journey to the surface. Once he reached the surface he began to walk with no particular destination in mind. He traveled from one small town to another on the surface, eager to talk to people and see what made the particular village interesting. A few months into his travels he encountered a small group of orcs one day while on the road. During a fight with the group, despite driving them away Brock was badly wounded and was practically dying on the side of the road. He woke up the next day laying in a bedroll with no recollection of how he had arrived there. When he got up he quickly came to realize that his wounds had all been healed and he felt perfectly fine. Upon further inspection of the area he could see a woman cooking something by a fire. When he greeted her, she introduced herself as Shaelyn Andrea a cleric of Sarenrae who was traveling to find a new home after hers had been destroyed by monsters. Brock was horrified at the tale of destruction that she told and vowed to help her find a new home where she could live and be safe. Shaelyn insisted that what she was looking for in a home was not safety but people that needed her help. The two traveled together for several months and Shaelyn would help heal people and treat sicknesses wherever she could.

While the two traveled through Voidosa and into Noctus they came across a traveling merchant by the name of Maximillion Gerard who claimed to be in need of protection as he went from town to town. While it was a rather simple protection job, as he never needed protection from much more than a thug or two, it served as a great experience for Brock as he was able to travel with people with whom he enjoyed their company. He became great friends with the kindhearted cleric and well meaning if not a bit greedy merchant as they traveled as a makeshift party for a short while. As they got to the more populated areas into Noctus they came across a town by the name of Tarren Mill. The town seemed to have a frequent problem with a rampant wild beast problem. While the group tried to help in the fighting of the creatures, it became clear very quickly that they were not strong enough to fight them. Regardless Shealyn had decided that she would like to stay in the town and help however she could. Maximillion shared her desire and figured he could use his particular talent of getting his hands on almost anything to be of use to the town. Brock stayed in the town using what little skill he had to help defend its walls and heal those who needed aid for just under a year. When it became clear that the other two intended to make this town a permanent residence Brock had to continue his journey despite his desire to help those in the town. He knew that people elsewhere would need help too and he still had much to see so he said goodbye to his companions and left with the next caravan heading out.

Since leaving Tarren Mill he has traveled alongside various caravans from town to town, spending a few weeks in each town before moving on to the next. Along the way he met several people, including a very likable bard by the name of Sebastian. He learned that Sebastian was also a wanderer, apparently in search of a particular person but wouldn’t really say who. He and Sebastian spent several caravan travels together, which Brock enjoyed because Sebastian would keep him entertained with tales of his own adventures or stories that he had heard from others. Before the two parted Sebastian told Brock that he should head toward Storm Bluff as it is the biggest port in Noctus and would most certainly have interesting people to meet or things to see. Upon parting with Sebastian he joined a caravan headed toward Storm Bluff.
