Tiamat

Tiamat is the the antagonist of Marduk and the mother of dragons.

Summary

Also known as Varatra by the dwarves, Tiamat is a primordial dragon and chief consort of Rahab the Destroyer, the demon god. Although Rahab is usually associated with N'Mosis, the demon moon, Tiamat is not typically associated with any heavenly body. She is described as the queen and mother of all other dragons, along with a number of other demonic figures from mythology. Tiamat is usually depicted as the chief antagonist of the mortal races in the War in Heaven, despite Rahab's ostensible supremacy over her. It is she who fights and is ultimately defeated by Marduk (or the other heroes in various mythologies). Her destruction (or confinement, depending on different versions of the story) by Marduk is the climax of the War in Heaven, and brings the event to its close.

Variations & Mutation

Tiamat is often described as having multiple heads, usually three or five, although the exact number differs in each retelling.   In some versions she is said to come from the sea, and in others that Marduk buried her in it. In still other versions, she is chained in the deepest of the nine hells.

In Literature

Tiamat is attested in both The Book of Tannis and The Hallows of the King
