The Quiet Men

There is a race of beings that look like men but have no faces, eyes, mouth, or nose. They are sometimes called the Shadowmen, Noppera-bo, the White Men, the Quiet Men, or the Yokai.

Variations & Mutation

  • They steal children for unknown purposes.

  • They are naturally tall, slim, and have long limbs.
  • They sometimes take the shape of spiders.
  • They can travel through shadows.

Cultural Reception

The Quiet Men are often used as a type of boogeyman on the Tranquil Coast. Parents use the threat that the Quiet Men steal naughty children in order to get their kids to behave.

In Art

There is a well-known nursery rhyme children sing about them.   Have you seen the Quiet Man,
have you seen him too?
Have you seen the Quiet Man,
he surely has seen you.
When you meet the Quiet Man,
you will not hear a sound.
He disappears in shadows
and he melts into the ground.
He has no eyes to see you with,
nor mouth to speak your name.
But when you walk alone at night
he’ll find you just the same.
His legs are long as tree trunks
and his fingers sharp as claws.
And though he has no mouth to speak,
he’ll catch you in his jaws.
He’ll take you to the shadow land
Where no one speaks a word.
And there he’ll take away your mouth
So you’ll no more be heard.
Oh when you see the Quiet Man
There’s nothing you can do.
For once you’ve seen the Quiet Man
You’ll soon be quiet too.
