Harvest

Harvest is the capitol of the farming belt. Grains and fresh foods are brought back to harvest from the farming communities down belt. Grains and fresh herbs are laid out in the clear sunlight to dry. Dozens of silos and warehouses store grains and foods ready for shipping.   Large shallow stone pits the size of swimming pools are cut into the rocky earth. Where Legumes and Herbs are strewn to bake and dry in the sun. Large silk nets are draped over the pools to keep the ever present ravens from eating the crops. Nonetheless the birds are a prolific menace, their cunning corvid nature an asset to their survival. And keeping them at bay is an ever present struggle. The presence of a larger than normal rodent population also draws a number of small predators as well. Birds of prey, cats and fennec foxes.   These cats and foxes live a blessed life in Harvest where they are lauded for their efforts to catch mice which would otherwise destroy crops. And their likeness is often seen in statues and carvings of buildings as a good harvest symbol. “A fat cat brings a happy harvest” they say.   Small gauge rail is heavily present, running roughshod around the place. All joining together like capillaries that feed the silos. The spine of the city is a series of large silos that flank the railway. Gangways and bridges cross over and between the silo's stitching the two halves of the city together. While giant augers feed their immense belly's from the every present procession of carts that make their offerings as they trundle along the powered rail line.   Smaller squat silos hold the gathered produce at the drying ponds.   Smaller Sunken warehouses also flank close to the railway, holding the fresh produce, and keeping it for the short while before it spoils.   Harvest is a relatively comfortable “blue collar” sort of town. Simple folk, but well provisioned being the hub of most of the Caldera's food. Many inns and taverns serve the transient population that booms around harvest times.   An enlarged Open market area near the towns civilian train station serves not only as a weekly market, but an important job finding place where those seeking employment bid for their employment in droves during the harvest seasons. It's hard but honest work, and you're guaranteed a good meal at least.   The ground is mostly stone with patches of red dusty soil that tends to be kicked up during the hot days.

Demographics

Mostly Human and Orc, though the more diminuitive races are certainly not rare. Harvest has it's share of wealthy individuals, especially among the Merchant guilds, but community means more than money among the farming villages. Harvest is no different. Family's are large, and good food is more conveniently available.

Government

Semi-Autonomous Municipality, but beholden to the machinations of the Council of Nine Each farming village is run by a locally elected Mayor. While he does not hold any real power, he is responsible for larger planning, organising the communities needs and petitioning and representing the community for and on behalf of the Capitol.

Defences

Other than a local force of rangers, run by the sheriff's department, there is no real military might established in Harvest.

Industry & Trade

As it's namesake implies. This is a community dedicated to agriculture. All aspects of it. Harvest especially deals with logistics. Shipping in supplies, and produce out. It also is heavily involved in the drying, storage and preparation of food items.

Infrastructure

Numerous Stone towers: Water Condensers   Drying Beds cut out of the stone bedrock. Giant Nets cover these giant shallow drying pools, to keep the birds at bay. Cats and Small Foxes are lauded for their predation upon rodents which also eat the grain. Snakes are also tolerated for the same reason.   Harvest is also the main port for shipping goods from the farming communities. As such it has a well established and organised Railport.   It also boasts a small airport, for airships; being the last stop before the veiled mists make flying too dangerous.

Assets

Large Silos for storing grain long term, and rail infrastructure connected to it. Drying pools for preparing grain. Secondary industries for supporting the other industries. Ratball Grand Stadium Grainers Quarters: A disproportionaly large quantity of medium-term accommodation buildings for the temporary harvest-time staff that ship into Harvest during it's namesake's period.

Guilds and Factions

A number of organisations have representation in Harvest The Merchant Guild The Farmers Union The Hunters Guild

Architecture

Like most of the Caldera. Stone is the main building product. Sheets of tin are used in lieu of stone for roofing over non-permanent dwellings or sheds and silos.

Geography

The southern slopes and plains are not what you would call hospitable. Despite the Mild climate and abundance of moisture, the ground is barren and made from a nearly monolithic stone bedrock. On the edge of the rim, the stone gives way to a dead lake. A long shallow lake of muddy brine. No deeper than knee high at it's deepest place. Nothing lives in or near it. Fortunately the impermeable bedrock keeps the salt at bay.

Natural Resources

Heavy mists blanket the region in a nearly perpetual maddening grey haze. This softens the harsh sunlight, providing an ambient glow during the day, and plenty of moisture available for condensers. Water and soft sunlight make the region the green belt it has become.
