Illium
Capital of the Holy Empire of Illium. It (and by extension the Empire) is currently ruled by Emperor Commodus. at first glance Illium is the height of civilization. Nearly every building is a masterpiece of marble. Bas reliefs flow across every wall and column. Bronze and tin tile the roofs of the common people while the elite have gold and silver. Aqueducts flow through the streets and statues adorn every fountain. Armed soldiers frequently patrol the streets keeping the peace while large, mindless moving statues made of stone and steel called "Automata" make their own patrols.
Upon closer inspection however, many beggars line the streets and when a visitor goes to give alms they find their coin purse stolen. Fights start and are quickly broken up by the Imperial Myrmidons. Those that are arrested but cant pay the fine.are sold to the training pits of the local barracks to be used as live targets for the Myrmidons. Those that show promise are sold to the Game Academy where they are beaten, tortured and treated like animals. Trained to be raging death machines to fight in the lethal Imperial Games.
Eventually if the spectating crowd feels merciful a pit fighter may gain their freedom. More often they die in the arena over what was as simple as a stolen loaf of bread.
