A tale of Loyalty

"It's funny, isn't it? The humans enjoy making bonds with creatures that they will outlast. They are devastated each time that their beloved die. But they do it again. Never did I expect them to seek out the pain of loss." A dark, tall being spoke.   "That is where you are wrong. They do not seek loss. They seek companionship. Good memories. Someone they can call family." A bright, equally tall creature responded.   "But they are all born with families. Why would they want more?"   "Because nothing can replace the love of a pet. When a dog waits for you, when you leave, and is ecstatic for your arrival. When your cat trusts you to keep watch while they eat. When your birds stay with you, despite being fully able to leave to live their own lives. That sort of love is unable to be found elsewhere."   "I guess you are right. Humanity isn't able to give true love to each other."   "There you go, being pessimistic again. They can. It's just too unique to be something you could realistically expect of your life."   The darker figure puts on their mask, and sighs. It never was easy to do this. Despite never expecting much of humans, taking from them was always a sad sight. Especially something as pure as this. Back in the physical world, the figure appears near a home. An old dog patiently waiting for its owner. It could barely stand, but still there it sat, at the door. The figure approaches.   "It is time."   "No. I have to wait here at home for him. I cannot leave yet."   "You have a new home now. Don't worry. You will see him again."   "Oh..."   By then, the dog could already see itself, slumped on the ground, merely a soul now. Gleaming with its purity.   "Follow me. I will show you the way home."   And the two left, even if the dog kept glancing back to see if its owner had arrived.   "Here is your new home."   They had arrived. A nice field, with plenty of open space to run around and play. But the dog just sat down, looking to where it came from.   "What are you doing?" Asked the masked figure.   "I'm waiting for him. Like I always have."   The masked one chuckled. Humanity truly didn't deserve such devotion. Quite the gift that was given to them.   The decades passed, but the dog remained there. Waiting patiently. Eventually, an old man walks into the field. Tired. Battered. Sad. But... the masked one pointed forward. He could see his dog. His most loyal companion. Waiting, decades after his death. The man rushed to it, and it was as if his soul lost its sadness. The weight, the chains that kept him down. They were destroyed. "I... I didn't think you would be waiting for me."   "I always was."
