Fiorna
Fiorna is a village of little consequence on the Mouradra side of the Florenza province in the Empire of Wardenheim, and the modern Fleurentine Republic. During the Imperial conquest of the Firenzii the battle of Iatroscan Roads took place outside the village, and the invading Imperial army laid waste to this hamlet with a population of scarcely 800.
Many of the townspeople were slain and, shortly after the Imperial army continued on its warpath, a new issue arose. Witches began to appear in the wake of the advancing army, robbing graves and lurking around the battlefield at nearby Ietroscan Roads. The town watch was all but destroyed after the battle, and within weeks the village was slowly being overrun by a growing army of undead soldiers under the command of wraithmen.
The lord of the village, Baron Lucco Mateo, died brutally in the night, being first killed and turned undead by a wraithman, and second being killed again by his own wife. Lady Caterina Mateo would survive the assault on her home, rally the remains of the town watch, evacuate the townspeople, and set up fortifications for the purpose of keeping a foothold in the village. Caterina was known to be violently stubborn and pragmatic by nature, and became known for her repeated denunciations of her late husband after his death as a weak and indecisive leader. Despite at the time still being young and capable of bearing children, she never remarried or took a lover.
