The Last Light

With resources running low inside Ironsgate, the final defenders felt it vital to seize the moment whilst the army was gathered and the two Geldmen brothers were ready to lead them. With Archan's forces on the horizon, a mix of mercenaries, dwarves, and native humans marched out to meet their enemy, Rhaegos being their final secret weapon. They met on a great flat field, covered in snow, with their back to a bridge across a great river (the exact location is still unknown). The battle was the single bloodiest of the war, with over 70% of the force lost and seemingly the final loss until a detachment of tieflings, orcs and others within the opposing force suddenly turned, sending the dark legions into disarray with a sneak attack from behind. This opportunity was used, and Ulric used a passionate speech to regather the force and break through the lines, bringing Rhaegos right to Archan's feet. Although no concrete story of what occurred next has been preserved, it is clear Archan was destroyed through Rhaegos' great art in the arcane, though the young prophet died in the effort himself. The dark forces seemed confused, then terrified, and began to run, hunted down by the suddenly hysterical survivors. Roughly 300,000 Coalition forces died in the battle, in the biggest force assembled in the second half of the war, and 120,000 of Archan's forces. Ultimately, the battle was a success, finishing the greatest conflict in recorded history, but the loss of life would impede development of the nation for centuries to come.
