A Schism of Dragons

Civil war breaks out between the dragons in the Dragon Empire.

When the Dragon Emperor Adural died, he was survived only by his latest children, a couple of beautiful twins: Hongshen, a girl with rainbow-colored hair, and Pantou, a platinum-haired boy. With no one able to say who was born first, the dragons and nobles came to disagreement about whom should rule. The Great Wyrm Ciadry claimed that not only was Hongshen the firstborn, but her hair showed that she was a chosen of Tiamat, a clear sign of her blessing. The Great Wyrm Peross, on the other hand, said that Pantou must have been born first, for was his hair not the color of Bahamut’s scales? - Clearly, a sign of his blessing!
Soon, the discussion was no longer one of terrestrial right to rule, but one of spiritual devotion: Those who believed that Tiamat was the greater of the royal Dragons sided with Hongshen while those who favored Bahamut stood on the side of Pantou. The children, all the while, were barely old enough to say the word “Crown”.
The discussion became a fight and then it became a war. Dragons were fighting in the skies, claws raking scales, teeth tearing wings and below, the mortals could only huddle in fear.
It was during this time the first dragons got the idea to infuse their eggs with magic. Which side first decided to do this is unknown, but soon the dragons being born was no longer the brown scaled sort of their parentage but rather splendid beauty, reflecting the ideology of their parents. Red, green, black, blue and white for the supporters of Tiamat. Brass, copper, silver, bronze and gold for those standing by Bahamut.
While this did without a doubt make the new generation stronger, it also made the eggs a target of war and one that was soon seized. Both sides now claim the others started attacking egg clusters first and the truth remains unknown, but what is known is that egg clusters were soon destroyed across the Empire.
If the war had continued, it is likely that every dragon would eventually have been killed. It didn’t however, as in 1103, Hosheng and Pantou married. While they had been the subject of a civil war amongst dragons, neither had ever really interacted with the dragons and had come to see them as more of a threat than an aid. The dragon civil war had wrought terrible collateral damage, with cities burning and villages crushed. The first act of the new Empress and Emperor was the banishment of all the surviving dragons from their Empire.
